Many of the attractions in the Exmouth and Ningaloo Range area are dog-friendly, from swimming with whale sharks to diving and hiking in the Cape Range National Park to spot turtles. So what can you do with your dog? Here are my top tips for walking your dog in Exmouth
My favorite dog beach near Exmouth is Bundeigh Beach. This beach is a 10 minute drive north of Exmouth itself, on the headland. This beach is located in the bay, but it is still beautiful sand and offers clean water for swimming. Unleash dogs are allowed on the beach.
For more adventure, there is a recommended dive site a few kilometers south, accessible by kayak. Check the signs at the ferry terminal. Alternatively, watch for fish hanging around the boat while snorkeling, but don’t expect to see any coral here.
Before, there was a dog cafe next to the beach, The Beach Shack. But unfortunately in late 2023 they closed and moved to the town center – see below for more information on their new venue, The Shack Exmouth.
The 5 Best Pet Friendly Hotels In Exmouth (2024)
For great views up and down the coast, head to Wlaming Head Lighthouse, a 15-minute drive northwest of Exmouth. It’s an easy, but long, steep path to the lighthouse, which is no longer operational, replaced by the light of the communication towers to the north. There are no restrictions on dogs, but they must be kept on a leash.
The lighthouse in the nearby parking lot is a popular sunset spot. Just be aware that there can be more mosquitoes before sunset after the rainy season. The lookout is also the best spot on the beach to see the whales that visit Ningaloo Reef every winter.
Exmouth is home to not one, but two craft breweries. We went to Whalebone Brewing Company, located in the industrial area on the south side of town. It is dog-friendly (although from 2023 only until 17:00), with a large outdoor patio with tables. It is also very suitable for children, with play equipment and sand.
At the time of our visit, there were seven local beers on tap, and three guest beers. Paddle paddles come in three different sizes, ranging from five to nine generous tasting glasses. If you’re feeling peckish, choose from the amazing pizzas, some of which are offered in kid sizes. Double check opening times vary seasonally.

Another brewery in town is Froth Craft Brewery. Located near the main shopping center, this factory, combined with a full restaurant, offers an extensive menu. There are still plenty of tables outside where well-behaved dogs are welcome. Like Whalebone, it also has live music on select nights.
While the best diving spots near Exmouth are in the Cape Range National Park and are strictly dog free, the same is not the case at Coral Bay. Well worth a day visit (it’s only 90 minutes) or longer.
Coral Bay’s main beach is dog-free, with signs at each entrance. But dogs are allowed in the grassy garden behind the beach and in the parking lot. If you are not traveling alone, can you give up and keep an eye on your child?
Otherwise, the southern beaches of the point are dog-friendly. The main beach is Paradise Beach, between the pier and the boat ramp, but it is only accessible by an unmarked 4WD road.

A popular alternative is to go up the protection and then go down to the front stretch of sand there. There are signs prohibiting walking on the crater to avoid erosion, but the easiest option is to reach Paradise Beach without a 4WD.
Two other options are the small beach next to the boat ramp, plus Five Finger Reef. The Five Finger Reef turnoff is just before the boat ramp, but it’s a 4WD trail. I would love to visit as I have heard great things about the diving!
Exmouth owes much of its existence to its military role. A military base was first established at Learmont in the South during World War II as part of Operation Potshot. After 1960, the establishment of Harold E. Holt led to the founding of the city.
It is interesting to stop at the Potshott and Crait Monuments, near Learmont Airport, to learn more about this fascinating history. In particular, the complaints of the soldiers about the bad environment is far from how the area is popular with tourists today, although it would be difficult to withstand the summer heat if there is no air.
Big Cottages In Exmouth
Despite being on the coast, Exmouth and the Ningaloo region are part of the Australian Outback, surrounded by outback. Many of these stations offer overnight or longer stays, with most dog-friendly campsites.
The closest option to Exmouth is Bullara Station, approximately an hour’s drive back on the main road and accessible by 2WD. It is open every year between April and October (check their website for exact dates), with animals welcome in one of the camps.
Other options near Coral Bay include Ningalo Station, Warroora Station and Gnaralo Station. Check the details in advance, as some campsites only have 4WD and sometimes self-driving cars are required.
Whether you want to go on a diving trip or visit the national park for the day, there are several dog sitting options in Exmouth.
Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages By The Sea To Rent
To get started, contact the visitor center, which will provide you with a list of local dog services. There are also occasional signs at the theme parks or check out Mutts Cafe which often has an advertisement on their poster.
Another alternative still available is Exmouth Vet Clinic – we left our dog in their room during the day. The doctor is only open from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays, plus the prices are high, but it’s a simple, no-call option.
Note that many of the beaches in the Exmouth area do not allow dogs, for various reasons. In Exmouth itself, Town Beach near the Yacht Club prohibits dogs, with white signs.
Dogs are also banned from many of the beaches on the west side of the cape near Exmouth. For example, the famous Turquoise Bay, with its good diving, is located in the Cape Range National Park, where dogs are not allowed.
About The Fido Trail
Further north outside the national park, many of the beaches still do not allow dogs, because of the litter that occurs in the summer months. Look out for road signs, and 1080 byte warning signs.
Head to one of the dog friendly beaches in the Exmouth area. There are two constituencies in the district, as shown on this map.
Golf Club Beach is immediately north of City Beach, starting from Warne Street, and is also popular for 4WDing on the beach. Alternatively, McLeod Beach is south of Exmouth Marina and is quieter.
There are also a number of other beaches scattered around that allow dogs, mainly on the east side of the island. Two popular options are Bundaghi Beach (see above), 10 minutes north, and the coastal area of Learmont Beach, 25 minutes south. Learmonth Beach Jetty is also a popular fishing spot.
Dog Friendly Beaches In Devon
There are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants to choose from around Exmouth, which is no surprise given the weather and the popularity of alfresco dining.
As I mentioned above, both Whalebone Brewery and Froth Craft Brewery offer food options. Whalebone has a wide selection of pizzas, while Froth is paired with a full restaurant that offers an extensive menu.
The Exmouth Shack is another cafe close to the center of Exmouth. The new launch of the Beach Shack at Bundegi Beach, is open for breakfast and dinner – see current days of the week which may vary. I recommend local grass cooked with garlic – half a kilo goes a long way for two!
Also in Exmouth, two other options around town are the Community Club and Mutts Cafe. The community is outside the mall, with outdoor seating and dog grooming. It is open daily for breakfast and lunch, with coffee and breakfast very well priced.
