Dog Friendly Crediton, Tiverton & Mid Devon
With its woodlands, gentle green valleys, beautiful riverside paths – and not forgetting its sturdy coat – it’s no wonder Yorkshire is a treat for dog owners. In response, many restaurants, hotels and B&Bs are now equipped with dog-friendly rooms, including some in the city. Some have cozy rooms with private patios, others serve things like dog beds and biscuits, while many allow dogs in the bar or lounge so they can join their owners for meals. Here are our best dog-friendly hotels in Yorkshire, in surrounding areas including Ripon, Scarborough, Skipton, York and The Dales.
Back Hall is surrounded by the most beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside, making it an ideal base for walkers and nature lovers. Your original cottage, built in 1705, has been added to over the years to accommodate two sympathetic extensions, while the beautiful gardens feature giant centuries-old oaks and weeping willows. The modern restaurant and bar have tables (mostly dells) and afternoon tea can be enjoyed in a cozy space, with an open log fire. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and are free in the 21 rooms (sleeps up to three).
This baronial pile, with its corner towers, ramparts and imposing entrance tower, looks like a castle. Inside, it is an old-fashioned English house, with sharply polished wood, dark red carpets, large hallways with gilt paintings and large hanging windows. You won’t be here: plus various study areas, walking trails (dogs are welcome to stop at 25pm), a four-acre walled garden, nine ball fields, plus a cookery school. The sparkling and airy spa offers a variety of indoor and outdoor chocolate experiences. The rooms, although in need of renovation, are quite comfortable, with nice slow traps, local books and generously sized bathrooms.
Although located just 10 minutes from the beach and the bustle of Scarborough, the hotel is surrounded by beautiful fields, woods and gardens in the countryside. The former Victorian villa, completely covered in stone ivy and with cream-painted sash windows, has been extended with additional wings and two lounges overlooking beautiful water features. The interior design aims to retain the character of a country house but with a rustic feel. Dogs are very welcome (£1 per night) and can join their owners upstairs in the conservatory. All 32 rooms are reasonably spacious, and some have four-poster beds.

The Devonshire Fells are located in some of North Yorkshire’s most heart-warming areas, with hiking trails, lanes and beautiful dales countryside on the doorstep. The hotel is part of the Duke of Devon’s 30,000-acre Bolton Abbey estate, whose 12th-century ruined abbey lies six miles to the south. The bright pink and charcoal striped dress that runs down the corridor of this beautiful Victorian building is the work of the Duchess of Devon, who sometimes turned the family chair into antique paintings and oil paintings at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Most rooms have a bath and shower and dogs can stay separately in each room for £10 per night.
A traditional car in a prime location overlooking Richmond Market with stylish, contemporary interiors and stylish bedrooms. It offers above-average pub food and a laid-back atmosphere that is very popular with locals. The king’s head was given to form a red light, an almost flat field more like a plane than a bar. There’s a chandelier above the wooden bar – along with the usual cakes, scones and beer taps – a wood-burning stove, feather wallpaper and a sumptuous sofa bed on the balcony. Dogs are welcome (£10 per night) and there is lots of information on local walks (from easy walks to long walks) to borrow.
Wensleydale Heifer is a charming 17th century stable, situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are 13 rooms, nine of which are traditionally decorated in the original structure and four themed rooms in a more modern extension across the hall – the James Harriot rooms come with boxes of all creatures, small and large. The first-class restaurant has a separate fish bar, a cozy traditional pub, a wood-fired pub with an open fire and a good range of whiskies. Dogs are allowed in the bar and some rooms (£20 per dog per night).
Malton is known as the ‘food capital of York’, and this 17th-century coachhouse is a great place to sample its produce, given an exciting new look and new lease on life by hoteliers Georgie and Sam Berman (of The Lucky). Onion Group) and owner Naylor-Leyland Tom. All three have a comfortable and elegant feel with antique and antique stores and galleries as well as silk sofas, dressers, beautiful lampshades, bold fabrics, quilted joinery, hardwood floors and interesting art on the walls. Dogs are welcome at the hotel (extra £10 per night) and will enjoy Malton’s charming surroundings.
