Dog-friendly Vacations Near New York – When you travel, you definitely want to take your boyfriend along to see new places. Dog parents often love the idea of traveling with their beloved pets, and vacationing with dogs is easier than most people think.
I am a freelance photographer and writer, and since adopting our rescue dog Quigley 6 years ago, we have traveled the world together, including 34 states and six countries! Our dog-friendly vacations range from wilderness camping to cocktails at the Waldorf Astoria and everything in between.

Dog Friendly Jaunts In Dutchess County
Northeast is a region of contrast. From the stunning Maine countryside to New York City’s exciting art scene, the region’s diversity attracts travelers of all kinds.
Boston is a place that has it all. Quigley and I lived in the city for many years and explored every nook and cranny together, from the bustling city center to the boutiques, sprawling parks and charming colonial districts. The area here is active in all seasons, but summer and fall make this area bright for dog lovers, because Bostonians know how to appreciate the sunshine.
Feeling patriotic? Many of the state’s major historical landmarks are located along Liberty Walk, a brick path that leads past historical markers that tell the story of the American Revolution. The trail runs through Boston Common, which includes an off-leash park. Nearby, travelers can visit other historic sites, such as Acorn Street, one of the most photographed streets in the United States, or the Public Garden, which features a sculpture of Mrs. Mallard leading her family with ducks. . Boston is known for its traditional and themed outdoor festivals, such as the annual Dog Carnival!
Dog Friendly Beaches Bronx, Ny
Want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city? Put on your backpack’s cutest life jacket and board one of the many ferries to Provincetown, a very dog-friendly town. Quigley’s first ocean swim has miles of dog-friendly water.
For more sophisticated dogs and parents, P-Town has a dog park with an art gallery. At leisure, visit magical dining and shopping establishments with more than 20 restaurants and countless shops that welcome your pet.
If they’re looking for foliage instead of fishing, visitors can find plenty of options nearby. Neshuva Valley Winery is one of many orchards that allow dogs to go apple picking. Those who want to disappear for a few hours (figuratively speaking) among the colorful trees can visit one of the many nature reserves nearby, such as the Blue Hills.
New York City has it all – attractions, great restaurants, parks, shopping and art, just to name a few highlights. Those who like to walk around the city and visit places will be happy to hear that the streets of New York are welcoming to dogs.
Travel Guide: New York City With Your Dog
Take your camera and visit the main attractions of the city. Classics like Thesda Terrace, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library, and DUMBO (Brooklyn’s pet-friendly neighborhood) are just a few to explore and take photos with your dog. If your dog needs some time off the leash, New York City offers plenty of dog parks.
A trip to New York is incomplete without visiting the shops. Luckily, your dog can join you on your last shopping trip! Jean from Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, rgdorf and Barneys, all of which are known to allow well-behaved dogs on the poles, although you should call ahead to confirm. If your dog is small and you want to take him for a spin, you can visit the Macy’s in Herald Square and ride the first wooden ramp together. Most of the boutiques are dog-friendly, and some Nordstrom locations even have special dog cookies for the best dog shoppers.
New York is a culinary delight, including dogs! However, the city is very strict about allowing dogs into restaurants, with the exception of Boris and Horton, the first dog-friendly cafe approved by the city’s Ministry of Health! But fear not; There are plenty of outdoor patio options around town for food vendors and plenty of pet-friendly pubs and breweries.
Visiting for Christmas? Dress up your bag in a classic puppy parka like Canada’s Posh Premium Parka and head downtown together for some holiday window shopping. Afterwards you will enjoy fresh cocoa and navel gazing at the Rockefeller Tree.

Coastal wildlife meets small-town charm in Bar Harbor, Maine. Business owners on Main Street are taking their canine love to the next level, with establishments like Coffee Hounds (who’ll post a photo of your dog online) and Bark Harbor (a boutique pet store and bakery). Local seafood favorite Stewman’s welcomes dogs.
Just a 15-minute drive from downtown, visitors will find themselves in the authentic Acadia National Park. With 158 kilometers of hiking trails and 45 kilometers of roads, pets can explore with their active parents.
For a more relaxed experience, head to Jordan’s Pool House for its famous pop-overs and house tea, followed by a leisurely stroll around the pool. Then drive to the top of nearby Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunset.
The southern hospitality attracts travelers from all over the world. The South is steeped in history and beauty, a non-religious retreat. From wild deserts to house of jazz and all the amazing food in between, the South is a dog-friendly travel destination.
Dog-friendly Vacations Across The United States
Located in the high desert of far west Texas, Marfa is only a 3-hour drive from any of the nearest airports, making it a destination for those who love an epic road trip. (Find tips for hiking with your dog here.) Marfa is known as an art tourism mecca, and visitors love the historic architecture, great restaurants, and artisan shops. Also, mystery buffs visit to see the amazing phenomenon known as Agni Marfa. Finally, most attractions and accommodations accept dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Pet parents have many placement options, and each has its own V. Glampers can bring their own vintage RV, teepee or tent/van at the iconic El Cosmico. Common areas include an outdoor kitchen and shower, a garden with a hammock (where Quiggle and I spent many hours reading and napping), and a cozy cabin. Those looking to treat themselves while enjoying the art scene can check into the St. George Hotel.
Dog parents swear by the delicious food at Marfa’s Burrito, Horn’s Pizza, Podshark and Capri. Before or after a meal, the best place to hang out and meet the locals is Planeta Marfa, a hacienda-style garden with a dance floor and deep terraces.
The owner, John, is known for taking groups to see the mysterious lights inside the Planet Bus. Always the host of the finale, John was happy to entertain Quigley for hours by sharing personal stories.

New Orleans is the city where I spent most of my youth, and I can’t wait to return with my four-legged king! The city is not lacking in inspiration from all sides in terms of colour, music and historical details. The city is walkable, delicious and world-class. Travel + Leisure called New Orleans “the #1 foodie city in America,” and you’d be saying the same thing if your mouth wasn’t full.
We don’t recommend a quick stop (or four) at Cafe du Monde. Dogs can join their parents on the porch, but my personal advice is to invite them to go. Check out the cafes and bars just a few steps from the cafe while watching the street vendors dance, sing and stroll through the famous Jackson Square. If you prefer a more refined affair during your meal, Broussard’s has a three-course jazz brunch.
For simple, classic New Orleans cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Father-Boy. Quigley likes small bites from Johnny’s Po-Boys, the oldest family restaurant in New Orleans. Dogs are not allowed inside, so we recommend taking a picnic on the river with you. Nearby Walding Park has many alcoves, wide lawns and a great view of the river.
New Orleans is rich in history, and the city allows you and your pet to indulge in a thrilling pastime. After dark, the city offers a series of spooky walks, and many groups like the Phantom French Quarter or the Witches’ Capital allow dogs to join.
