We’ve scored all of the off-leash dog beaches in Southern California over the past few months and listed them from our favorite to least favorite.
Huntington Dog Beach in Southern California was definitely our favorite off-leash dog beach and we would come here every weekend if we lived nearby. The dog beach area is clearly marked and we had no trouble finding a parking spot after arriving just before noon.
Its length, cleanliness and shallow water created the best environment for our pups It was Zooey’s first time going into the water alone and she had so much fun going into the water
A wonderful non-profit group runs this beach and does a wonderful job of maintaining “off-leash” conditions so our pups can run free.

The Benefits Of Going To A Dog Beach
This was the first off-leash beach we visited and the farthest from LAX For some reason, this dog beach is always listed as a Southern California area; However, Carmel is actually part of Northern California and is much closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.
We decided to go ahead and add it to our list because Carmel-by-the-Sea is a dog paradise and is ranked the #1 Dog Friendly City in America.
We were staying at a nearby dog friendly hotel so parking was very limited so we decided to go to Carmel Beach. The scenery here is beautiful and the powdery white sand feels so good on our feet
Kuma especially loved the sand here and was very excited when his little paws touched the sand. We think the white sand reminded him of Florida

It was the busiest dog beach we have visited so far We arrived around 9 am and were surprised to find the parking lot completely full
Luckily we found a spot and the key was to be patient because it seemed like there was always someone going back to their car.
There are tons of surfers, beach volleyball players, and dog owners, so it was packed despite the large parking lot.
How wide the dog section was and the water was shallow enough for our dog to go in and enjoy the waves There are also many large rocks here, so if your child likes to jump on rocks, this is a great place

That said, many of our friends love this beach and I highly recommend it If you live near the area or visit on a day when it’s not too busy, it’s probably a better experience.
