Burlington, Vermont is one of the most dog-friendly places in New England. With wonderful outdoor adventures and a quiet and vibrant city, Burlington is a playground for dogs and their friends. You will find many fun things to do with your dog. Bike along the shores of Lake Champlain on the Burlington Greenway and stop for a local brew at one of the city’s dog-friendly brewpubs. Burlington brewpubs that allow patio pets include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co allow dogs inside. Church Street Market, one of New England’s most popular pedestrian areas (and dog-friendly places), has plenty of food and dog shopping. Of course, you can’t visit Maine without trying the local lobster rolls, and Bite into Maine has a food truck and picnic tables for the animals in the park. Higgins Beach is a popular place for pooches to splash around in the sand and water. After a long day of fun in the sun, relax at the Ocean Hotel, a luxury beachfront resort that offers amazing activities for animals and their owners.

For the serious hiker, Smugglers Notch State Park offers miles of hiking through stunning green mountain scenery. For something smaller (but still fun), you and your dog can enjoy a walk on the Stow Recreation Path. This 11-mile paved trail features dog-friendly restaurants and beer stands along the way. Follow VT 100 north for 3.2 miles from Stowe to Randolph Road. Turn right and continue for 0.5 km. Turn right onto Moss Glen Falls Road and continue 0.5 miles to a small parking lot.
We Love Your Dogs!
It’s a very short, but well worth the hike to the amazing falls. Although the road is not well marked, the road is clear. Follow the stream up to the waterfall. Be careful when going down, because the vegetation on the side of the road is slippery and dangerous. Inexperienced climbers should stay on the left side at the top of the falls. The trail connects to a wide snow trail, so be careful not to go the wrong way.
From Trapp Family Lodge, follow Highway 100 north to Moscow Road. Turn right onto Moscow Road and left onto Cottonbrook Road. Continue two miles to the Cotton Brook entrance to Mansfield State Forest. The parking lot is on the right. The road starts at the red gate. The tour passes several old farms and sawmills, and offers views of the Bolton valley and mountain range. (If you encounter a moose, enjoy it, but be safe).
From the Trapp Family Lodge, take Trapp Hill to Luce Hill Road. Go down Luce Hill and turn left. From there, it’s about nine miles to the Roa parking lot at the top of Notch Road. Parking is available on the left and right. The path is on the right. The trail to the pond follows the trail to Sterling Pond. You can do a loop of the pond by following the Elephant’s Head Trail, but be careful not to backtrack on the Sterling Pond Trail.
A more challenging trail can be made by taking the Long Trail from Route 108 down and returning via the Sterling Pond Trail, then hiking Route 108. A great view from Sterling Pond ( 3,000 feet up). See the Long Guide for more information.
