Dog-friendly Rockhampton: Visiting With A Dog

All beaches are “closed” daily before 8am and after 4pm unless otherwise marked. Sometimes your dog must be on a leash. For more information visit the Livingstone Shire Council website.

Japan has many local cafes and restaurants, all within easy walking distance of our park, that allow you to enjoy a great coffee or a delicious meal with your loved one, including:

Take your pooch to Great Cape Island! You don’t have to miss a visit to beautiful Cape Island because you want to sit back and take care of your dog. Freedom Fast Cats and Keppel Connection allow dogs to be transported on board (not on walks). The hub of Capri’s Corn Coast, Yapon is a great dog beach to hang out with your pooch. Located 30 minutes’ drive from Rockhampton and less than 8 hours north of Brisbane, find out what’s on offer when visiting Yeppoon in Queensland with a dog.

One of the main attractions of Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast are the many beautiful beaches that stretch between Yeppoon and Emu Park in the south.

Dog-friendly Mackay: Visiting Mackay With A Dog

Fortunately, the default beach rule in nearby Livingstoneshire is to allow dogs on a lead on all beaches, including before 8am and after 4pm, unless otherwise marked. So almost all the beaches in the area are dog friendly!

In my search, I didn’t come across any beaches where dogs are not allowed, although the beaches north of Byfield National Park are definitely off limits.

During my visit in 2021, a local tourism website mentioned that dogs were not allowed at Yapon Main Beach, Emo Park Beach and Koi Bay Beach. However, I can confirm that Cooee Bay Beach had regular signs allowing dogs off before 8am and after 4pm, while neither Yeppoon Main Beach nor Emu Park Beach had a dog ban. With these last two, dogs are allowed, but they stay away from protected areas.

There are two beaches with different rules: Farnborough Beach with Bengali and Fisherman’s Beach in Emu Park. On all beaches, dogs are allowed off-leash during the day, but not on weekends or public holidays, when they must be on a leash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Farnborough Beach is located between Bingley’s Boat Ramp and Wells Creek Bar, with easy access on Hinz Avenue, close to 4WD access. At Bajja tas-Sajjieda, the outer part of the rope starts 150 meters north of the boat ramp, and online access is allowed before this point.

Although alligators are rarely a problem in the far south, sea turtles can be a threat during the summer months, and watch out for turtle nesting season from October to March. If there are dogs nearby, keep your distance and keep the dogs on a leash, or away from the beach completely.

Along with hitting the local beaches, consider these dog-friendly travel ideas for your Japan vacation…

One of the highlights of a visit to Japan is to head to the big Cape Island. With its stunning beaches, swimming and snorkeling, it’s a great day out for all the family, and lucky dogs are invited to join you.

Yeppoon Furnished Monthly Rentals And Extended Stays

There are two boat options to travel to Great Cape Island, both are dog friendly. We traveled with Keppel Connection, who let dogs board the plane for free. Unlike the ferry to Magnetic Island, there was no need for our dogs to wear suits.

There is also Freedom Fast big cats, which charge $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs. Both boats take 30 minutes and operate on the same schedule.

Once you arrive at Great Keppel Island, you will notice that there are no signs on the beach that dogs are allowed or not. However, the island is part of Livingstone Shire, the same as Yeppoon, so it’s likely that the same defaults for dogs being allowed on the beach, as well as turning them off before 8am and after 4pm, apply here. There is no mention of Grand Cape Island on their website.

The ferry will drop you off at Fisherman’s Beach, in the center of the island. I recommend walking along the southern end of the beach, where you start a short path to the nearby beaches, including the shelf beach.

Shelving Beach is one of the most popular surfing beaches on the island and is definitely the easiest to visit, if you don’t have your own boat. It’s a 5-10 minute walk, although the last part of the journey is quite difficult, especially if you’re backpacking, like we were! There are rocky outcrops on both sides of the beach. We preferred the area on the left side, which became easier to access when the tide was out.

If you brought your own picnic lunch, I suggest you do a circuit of Slving Beach, Monkey Beach and Long Beach. Monkey Beach is famous for the best surfing, but we ran out of time to visit. However we arrived at Long Beach, a beautiful beach for swimming, long and quiet. We almost had the beach to ourselves (and maybe even let our dog loose). The east side is actually a nude beach, although it was empty when we visited.

Note that the walking paths around Capel Muku Island are not very well maintained, as the main resort on the island has been closed for many years. It is possible to stick to the track that starts at the end of the fisherman’s beach, or ask the local staff for directions.

If you catch the Keppel Connection ferry to the island, you can include lunch and drinks at the Great Keppel Island Hideaway. Great value and our burgers and chips were delicious. However, a walk to the bistro at the northern end of Fisherman’s Bay is convenient if you want to extend your time exploring the island.

The Bistro at Great Keppel Island Hideaway is outdoor and dog friendly, with plenty of water bowls. Although I noticed that no dogs were left on the table this time – I’m not sure which area he was referring to.

Unfortunately, most accommodations on Big Cap Island don’t allow dogs, so it’s best to just visit for a day trip. If you plan to stay a night or two, research whether any vacation homes currently allow dogs.

If you want to explore the area’s beautiful coastline without stepping on sand, a popular walk for humans and dogs is along Yeppoon beach. Take your time, with plenty of picnic chairs and sun loungers along the way, not to mention plenty of beachside restaurants, which are usually dog-friendly.

Dogs need to be on a leash, with plenty of reminders to pick up after your dog, plenty of bins and poo bags available. Note that dogs are not allowed in the Yeppoon Lagoon (but it is okay to walk in front) and in the Capel Kraken water area.

Unfortunately, many of the other coastal walks in the area such as the Bluff Point Scenic Walk and the Trek to Fan Rock Lookout are located in smaller parts of the Capricorn Coast National Park.

Emo Park is only 15 minutes away in southern Japan. Along with a great fishing beach, it is also home to two historical sites. On the hill above the pier is the statue of the Singing Ship, which was erected in 1970 as a memorial to Captain Cook. Listen to him sing when the wind blows.

Adjacent to the Singing Ship is the Anzac Memorial Walk. This memorial and short stretch of road was built to match the WWI century and is a great place to visit. Under the large ceiling are information panels about important battles, as well as the participation of local Queenslanders.

Dogs are welcome on leashes on the sidewalk and surrounding garden, although they treat the site with due respect.

If you’re interested in history, it’s also worth heading into Rockhampton. One of the first cities in central Queensland, the city has an impressive collection of historic buildings.

Some of the main buildings to check out are the Customs House, the Caterion Hotel, the Rockhampton Post Office and several court buildings. Most of the heritage buildings are on Quay Street by the river, while the post office and courthouse are a block behind East Street.

The riverside area along Quay Street has recently been restored and is a great place to walk along the Fitzroy River, with its many shade trees. Keep your dog on a leash.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in Rockhampton’s main botanical gardens, and surprisingly, the suburb is free.
