Before you go on vacation with your furry friend, check out our top tips to make the trip a smoother experience for humans and pets alike.

If you’re thinking of taking your pet on vacation, it’s really important to do some basic research beforehand. Before booking a hotel, make sure it is definitely pet-friendly.

If you are traveling abroad, you will need to check the entry requirements for the country you are visiting. Requirements vary by country: for example, some require a rabies vaccination or rabies treatment. By law, all dogs in the UK must be microchipped, so if you’re taking your dog on holiday, you should also take their microchip document with you.

Researching the documents you need to have with you when you travel, such as pet passports or health certificates, will make going through border and customs much easier. The quarantine period for pets can be very long if you are traveling abroad and your pet does not meet the entry requirements, so research this carefully in advance.

If you’re flying, be sure to check the airline’s policy on traveling with pets and their pet history.

Your pet’s health and well-being is really important, so before you make travel plans, consider whether your pet would be a good candidate for travel. Pay attention to your pet’s temperament and how well they handle travel, long periods away from home, new people, places and experiences and how well they are trained. If you think your pet will accompany you on a stressful vacation, look into alternative options such as leaving your pet at a boarding house or finding a home sitter.

If you decide to bring your pet with you, pet insurance should cover your pet if it needs a trip to the vet while you’re on vacation. If your pet is prone to motion sickness and travel anxiety, it may be worth talking to your vet about some possible medications that will ensure your pet has a more comfortable trip.

If your pet has any existing health problems, the vet can discuss this with you and prescribe enough medication to last you throughout your holiday. A vet will also be able to advise on any recommended vaccinations and treatments to protect against potential health risks that may not be in your area.

Before you leave, put together a pet travel bag that includes everything your pet will need on vacation. You’ll want to pack enough food and treats for the duration of your trip, your pet’s favorite toys, a comfortable bed, litter boxes and litter boxes, and first aid supplies. If you are traveling abroad, you will also need to pack relevant documents (such as health certificates and pet passports) for them.

Make sure your pet always has fresh water; if you travel by car, a basin or “spill-free” water bottle can be a worthwhile investment.

If you need to use a travel carrier for your pet, give them some time to get used to the boat before you leave. The carrier should be well ventilated and spacious enough for your pet to stand, turn around and sleep comfortably.

Be sure to park the stroller in a place away from sunlight and drafts, and that it is fastened with a seat belt. It’s a good idea to put your pet’s favorite toy and a cozy blanket in the trunk as well.

There is nothing worse than a long trip and using the bathroom. If you’re driving a long way, make sure you stop often to give your pet time to stretch its legs and go to the bathroom. If you find a safe spot along the way, play some energy games with your pet so they can burn off some energy before you get back on the road. If you’re flying internationally, make sure your pet has time to go to the bathroom before boarding.

If you keep their routine close to what they are used to it will be much easier for your pet to adjust to the trip. Try eating them and taking them out for vacations and walks at the same time as you do at home. Make sure fresh water is always available for them, which is especially important if you are on vacation in a hot climate or doing a lot of vigorous activity.

While some pets may find traveling easy, others may find the experience stressful. Be sure to watch for signs of stress or motion sickness in your pet so you can make them more comfortable. If you’re traveling with a dog, watch for frequent panting, yawning, spitting, vomiting or restlessness.

If you suspect your dog is restless, take frequent breaks during your walk. Teaching your dog short car trips first (with the help of positive reinforcement) can ease them when it comes to a longer road trip. Specially designed travel sprays can also be effective in making your dog feel more comfortable in the car.
