Beck Hall is surrounded by beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside, making it an ideal base for walkers and nature lovers. The original log cabin, built in 1705, has been added to over the years and includes a number of sympathetic extensions, while the beautiful garden includes huge centuries-old oak trees and weeping willows. Lunch (made mainly from Dals) is served in the modern restaurant and bar, and afternoon tea can be had in the cozy lounge, which has an open fireplace. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and are free in 21 rooms (up to three can stay).
This baronial pile looks like a castle with corner towers, bastions and an imposing entrance tower. Inside, it’s a grand old-style English house, with polished wooden floors and deep red carpets, grand hallways hung with gilded portraits and large windows. You won’t be bored here: as well as the various countryside locations, there are walking trails (dogs can stay for £25 a night), a four-hectare walled garden, a nine-hole golf course and a cookery school. The elegant and spacious spa offers a variety of thermal experiences as well as indoor and outdoor pools. The rooms, although in need of updating, are very comfortable with gin slow touches, local books and extra large bathrooms.

The former Victorian farmhouse, all gilded stone covered with ivy and cream sash windows, has been extended with an additional wing and two courtyards with beautiful water features. Inside, the goal is to keep the cottage feel but with the ingenuity of a country house. Dogs are very welcome (£10 per night) and can join the owner when eating in the kennel. The 32 rooms are of reasonable size and some have four-poster beds.

The hotel is part of the Duke of Devonshire’s 30,000-acre Bolton Abbey estate, a ruined 12th-century abbey six miles to the south. The bright pink, charcoal-striped carpets that line the corridors of this beautiful Victorian building are the work of the Duchess of Devonshire, who sometimes raids the family seat at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire for antiques and oil paintings.
