Dog Friendly Vacations Upstate Ny – Like most busy parents, I try to make time to take Zoe on dog adventures. Growing up in an extraordinary family, my childhood was filled with travel and road trips. I can’t wait to relive some of these memories with my fur baby. So when we were offered the opportunity to book a Weekend Getaway through a cabin rental company, I was shoehorned in!
I always hear about people going to New York, but I’ve never been there. That all changed in the spring of 2019 when I had the opportunity to stay at the Getaway Cabin in the Catskill Mountains.
Dog Friendly Vacations Upstate Ny
Getaway offers dog-friendly cabins within driving distance of New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Portland, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Getaway will also offer cabins near Los Angeles and Dallas. They make it really easy to enjoy traveling with your dog without having to worry about whether the accommodation is pet-friendly. Plus, there’s an outdoor area for the dogs to play, and the little town is just waiting to be explored.
A Dog Friendly Day In The Hudson Valley
Along with my colleague Danielle and her dog Sawyer, we left the office and headed north, breaking our “always alive” mentality to focus on the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air.
Friday morning our journey began at the cabin. It was definitely easier than our usual Friday morning commute to the office.
The weather was foggy 120 miles to the north, our travel soundtrack played and fresh air blew through the car windows. The dogs love to sleep in the backseat, and Zoe even took the opportunity to do herself in my jacket.
It certainly comes in handy for anxious four-legged travelers, especially on long trips, and we always keep it handy. I would love to take Zoe on the trip up north.

When we arrived at our dog-friendly cabin, the dogs were definitely excited to explore, and we led them around the property (or so they said) before heading to our cozy little room.
The smell of fresh wood astounded us as we entered each of our cabins, the beautiful bay windows illuminating the entire space. The queen-sized D was furnished with freshly laundered sheets, and a small set of strawberries and a note greeted us door-to-door for the next few days.
There is a kitchen with everything you need to cook, a small pantry with snacks for purchase, and a private bathroom with a shower that includes shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
After dropping off our bags (see what we packed for our trip here ), we hopped in the car and headed north to Albany, New York for a cup of coffee and an early lunch. We hadn’t originally planned to go to Albany, but since we weren’t there and it was so close, internal researchers convinced us to tackle the state capital.

After a quick refuel at the Espresso Bar – a dog-friendly local coffee shop with a variety of teas, coffees, pastries, and even a variety of dairy alternatives – we explored the city on foot.
Most of Albany’s restaurants, shops and cafes welcome trained and leased pups, and this badass state capital has plenty for us! We walked down historic Lark Street, where the old shops and brownstones reminded us of New York City. Then we headed to the New York State Department of Education, which opened in 1912. We didn’t get a chance to go inside the building, but we admired the 90-meter marble columns out front. The dogs enjoyed playing with us in the nearby grassy park before heading to the Iron Gate Cafe for dinner.
Located next to the 1890s Holroyd Castle, The Iron Gate offers fresh, vegetarian food options on a beautiful, dog-friendly outdoor patio. While this is a great dining experience with two well-managed pups, it can be more difficult with larger or more energetic pups, as diners must pass outside seating to enter the restaurant.
I ordered the Vermonster sandwich—a turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, apple, lettuce, and walnuts—and Danielle got the Buddha bowl made with roasted sweet potato, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa, and tofu. We were halfway through lunch before the rain started pouring down.

We packed food, got the dogs and tried to get in the car before the rain started. Raising pets isn’t perfect, but it does make for some great moments. We finished our short drive, laughing at our children’s dirty feet and messy hairstyles, before heading south.
We were lucky, the spring rain didn’t last long and hit us within an hour. So, we continued with our plan to explore Caterskill Falls.
The first route to Catterskill Falls is on foot. This is a fairly easy dog friendly tour, approximately 2 hours round trip.
We left our car in the NY-23A parking lot, near the hiking trail. At first, the smaller waterfall focused on the humble and stunning landscape ahead. Despite the steep and rocky sections, it’s a 2.5 mile hike. A cascading two-tiered waterfall—the tallest in New York State—marked the end of the trail and allowed us to rest and enjoy our accomplishments.
Buying A Vacation Home Or A Cabin Upstate, New York
Zoe and Sawyer are total troopers. I would definitely recommend this hike to parents with dogs who are used to exploring the great outdoors, but be careful with small dogs as they can slip and get stuck on some of the rocks. If you go, bring plenty of extra water for the four-legged walkers and take breaks along the way to catch your breath (and yourself!).
After the ride, we headed to a nearby (cash only) Chinese restaurant, Fortune Garden, to take back to our cabin. We feed our dogs their treats before sitting down to dinner. Sweet and Spicy Chicken and Dr. The pepper was never steamed, or satisfying.
After all the mouths were fed, we lit the fire to eat dessert: a s’mores set waiting for us when we arrived at our cabin. Even with well-behaved puppies, I recommend keeping them on a short leash so they don’t wander too close to the fire (and the smores-chocolate stuff is toxic to dogs!). As we roasted marshmallows, Daniel and I talked about the events of the busy day. Before we knew it, it was time for us and our children to retire to our cabin for a good night’s sleep.
Waking up the next day to the big windows overlooking the pines was a breath of fresh air compared to my view (and the alarm went off)! Zoe spent some time pulling out the rag blanket while I prepared a quick and easy DIY Chewy Eats trail mix to take with us on that day’s hike.
Catskill Pet-friendly Vacation Rentals
While the meals were being prepared in our cabin refrigerator, we all walked around the cabin, enjoying the view and the peace. The ride was relatively quiet and peaceful, the sounds of commotion and the sound of dogs’ feet filling the air. We didn’t see many people on the trail near the cabin, but there were other weekend visitors away from home with their four-legged furry family members. We gave the dog parents a friendly wave before heading back to the cabin to get ready for the day.Â
After we finished our paths and packed our bags, we headed to breakfast. We picked up some fresh food and drinks around the W at Getaway’s suggestion.
This charming little market has a great outdoor space for furry travelers, and the savory and sweet selection is a perfect way to start any day. We enjoyed roast turkey panini, waffles and avocado toast along with cold drinks, lemonade, orange juice and matcha latte.
Before using Zoe in 2017, I had always heard that Pugs are generally not the easiest dogs to ride and tire easily due to their short muzzles. Boy, did my Pug prove them wrong. Always two steps ahead of me—literally and figuratively—Zo led our pack of four up Overlook Mountain, a 5-mile hike.
Dog-friendly Winter Getaways Within 2 Hours Of Hoboken + Jersey City
Although the site is less rocky and gravel-paved than Kaaterskill Falls, the summit of Big Mountain is more difficult to approach. We had to contend with a steady incline, but the fresh air and thick fog filled us with curiosity and interest. This interest will not fail!
