Disney World always provides quality animal care. There was a barn at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground when it opened in 1971, and Disney later added additional barns to each of its four parks.

The Insider spoke with Ray Clennell and Leo Reynoso – co-owners of Best Friends Pet Hotel – about the hotel, the animals they care for and the services they provide.

Clennell has spent 10 years working for Best Friends Pet Care, while Reynoso has been with the company for 16 years.

“In the past you would drop your dog off, and we would take care of him with walks, food and water, but no other work — nothing to decorate or add to his comfort,” Reynoso said of the former Disney property. .

But in modern hotels, he said, there are many services and activities. You can send your dog to Doggy Day Camp, arrange to babysit your cat, board your pet and more.

About 20 of those rescues, Reynoso said, were done by people who moved to Tampa, Florida, before Hurricane Idalia.

Reynoso said pets often include rabbits, hummingbirds, ferrets, “lots of birds” and turtles. Many times, they are asked to take care of betta fish.

“We have a turtle that comes to us seven times a year called Mr. Bubbles,” Reynoso said. “You’re amazing.”

Pigs live on the property “all the time,” according to Reynoso, and ducks are other regular visitors.

“We have a lady who, every year, brings us five of her ducklings,” Clennell said. “They took over one of our club rooms and threw eggs all over the place.”

Reynoso said hotel staff can keep any animal “non-poisonous except monkeys.” That said, people ask to bring strange animals “all the time.”

“We did tarantulas, screaming cockroaches — crazy, crazy stuff,” he said. “And we just got a call from somebody about going out in the middle of a storm and bringing his zebra.”

“Sometimes people try to steal these pets and take them to the park,” Reynoso said. “So we finally got a call from Disney saying, ‘Hey, this lady is trying to bring her baby kangaroo to Animal Kingdom. Can you take her for the day?’ That’s how we sometimes end up with them.”

As for accommodation, dogs can stay in one of five, small and inexpensive rooms throughout the house.

“It depends on where the owner has brought us,” Reynoso said. “We don’t have details. We want to know how much the accommodation will cost.”

“The general perception is that we only work for Disney,” Reynoso said. “But you don’t have to live on a Disney property to use us for grooming or other services. “Anybody in Florida is considered local,” Reynoso said. “We have people from Miami and Jacksonville bringing their dogs. There’s also a Disney cruise line an hour and a half away. So people — not just Disney cruises, but any cruise — send their animals here.”

“We have people from Canada who are like snowbirds coming down,” he continued. “I mean we bring people from all over the world here.”

But most importantly, according to Clennell and Reynoso, Best Pet Hotel is flexible and willing to do whatever it takes to take care of your pet.
