Vacation Dog Killer – When people think of African animals, they think of being mauled by elephants or chased across the savannah by a pride of lions. Perhaps they fear being mauled by wildebeest or buffalo, eaten by black mambas, stung by hippos, or drowned by crocodiles.
But that is foolishness. The bone crown of Africa’s deadliest animal has to go to the most visible animals of the bunch – cartoon dogs.
Vacation Dog Killer
The cartoon African dog may look like the tail duster you grew up with, but I assure you, this dog does not wear Christmas sweaters. Alternately known as the African wild dog, Cape hound, ornate wolf, and half a dozen other combinations of these terms,

Scarier than his big ears and click coat. Some call them “devil dogs” and perhaps not without reason.
“One of the reasons people think cartoon dogs are merciless killers,” says Esther van der Meer, a scientific advisor to cartoon dog conservation, “is the way they devour their food.”

I spent a week with the WildEarth.tv team, a team that broadcasts live events in the African bush online twice a day, every day. Her show Safari Live airs this week during Nat Geo Wild’s Big Cat Week. (Full disclosure: Nat Geo Wild paid for my travel and lodging. I picked up the tab for malaria medication.)

While the rest of us forgot to put cover sheets on our test process specification reports, the WildEarth.tv team tracked tigers through urine and placed their heads into painted dens.
Like a dominance battle between a pride of lions. And while they watch the Big Five literally on a daily basis, many seem more impressed with the Wild Dogs.
Maybe it’s to experience wild dogs for what they really are – both bloodthirsty carnivores capable of ripping large animals to the bone, but also highly social animals with strange hierarchies that will seriously annoy all Ayn Rand fans. Each side of their biology supports the other. Both cannot be separated.
Take this wild dog hunting clip filmed by WildEarth.tv during Big Cat Week last year. Let me tell you now that it ended in one of the bloodiest kills I’ve ever seen – the dogs unleashing a pregnant impala and carrying off her kicking fetus, cameras rolling from mere feet away. But don’t let the hideous creation overshadow the brilliance it’s built for. More on that in a moment. For now, just watch.
Serial Killers Love Puppies Too. From Myra Hindley To Doctor Death… Here…
“Although it’s not a pretty sight, it’s a quick way to kill prey,” van der Meer said, “especially compared to the hours it takes lions to kill prey.”
Large cats tend to search for the animal’s windpipe, a method that fails if the grip is not firm. Another way is to cover the nostrils and mouth. And at least one pride of lions has learned how to topple elephants in this way: first they open the elephant’s back and then crush them with their weight, while other lions cling to the trunk and attack the throat. All in all, you can see
For example, cheetahs are notorious for getting hot, so you’ll often see them perched on prey mid-kill, kicking up the dust in a frenzied creature. Wild dogs are not like that. Since they have evolved to withstand high body temperatures, there is no need to cool down after a chase. If you catch one, you’ll be stomaching half a dozen before you know you’ve hit the ground.
But at least you can be sure your body will be shared! Van der Meer explains that wild dogs rarely show aggression towards each other, especially not when it comes to food. And according to studies, wild dog puppies are preferred to kill when they are old enough to participate in the hunt. In fact, at the beginning of the video above, you can see one of the adult dogs abandoning the hunt to bring in reinforcements, including a pack of puppies. And this all-for-one, one-for-all relationship extends beyond youth.

“Painted dogs are very social creatures that provide community care not only for their young but also for the sick and injured,” van der Meer said.
Packs consist of between six and 20 animals and are usually led by an alpha pair. If one of the alpha pairs dies, the pack splits into two same-sex adult groups. Surprisingly, a male from the most sexually mature group, rather than the largest, was given the status of alpha dog in the male group. Alpha females maintain their status for life.
This breakdown, known as packet splitting, allows for the peaceful transfer of energy while diversifying the gene pool. Over the course of a year, the dynamics of each pack change as new cubs are born and sexually mature males join in the hope of breeding.
Roger Burroughs of AfricanWildDogWatch.org has a full article on the process, but here are a few notes that highlight the crazy reverse hierarchy of these animals: Whenever an alpha male transfers status, the previous alpha (if alive) remains. In peace with the pack. When the group finds orphaned boys, they adopt them. Once the orphans are sexually mature, one of them takes over as the alpha of his foster pack – again, without any violence. If two breeding pairs have offspring at the same time, the offspring of the inferior pair is given priority over the offspring of the alpha pair at the slaughter. In other words, cartoon dogs in Africa live by a code that fundamentally contradicts capitalism, the “law of the jungle” and everything you know about your high school cafeteria.

So yes, we’re talking about an animal with the highest bite force of any carnivore, an animal with multiple premolars designed for gnawing bones, an animal with the highest success rate of any land predator. But these are not just weapons of destruction. These are highly developed tools that allow animals the size of a border collie to survive on a continent full of horns and teeth and claws.
Unfortunately, despite millions of years of evolutionary improvement, the future of the African color dog looks bleak. According to van der Meer, fewer than 650 breeding pairs remain. Human cruelty is a problem because animal owners see carnivores as animals and shoot them on sight. Dogs can also be exposed to diseases such as rabies and distemper from accidental traps, being hit by cars. And every death matters.
“Once a pack loses too many members and the pack size becomes too small, the entire pack declines due to hunting and breeding success,” van der Meer said.
Now shelter is lost. The total remaining population is now only 9.4 percent of the species’ historical range. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed the wild dog as endangered since 1990 – and the population is still declining. African wild dogs are a twilight species, often overlooked in the flash cards and picture books we use to teach our children about wildlife.

From conveying peaceful energy and caring for puppies to defecating in discomforting animals, the complexity of African wild dogs makes hunters even more beautiful. Five people stuck in a small car for days can easily cause problems. And this is especially true of the Griswold family.
But despite the resulting confusion, Clark Griswold understood better. He wants to take advantage of a two-week vacation to take his wife (Ellen) and kids (Audrey and Rusty) across the country to the amusement park Valley World.
Although Alan and the kids love to fly, Clark believes a road trip is the ideal way to travel. “It’s fun to go there,” he said. So the Griswolds piled their belongings into their new station wagon (which Clark forced them to buy) and began their journey from Chicago to California.
