Although a seaside resort, a visit to Brighton feels like a city break. You’ll probably spend more time in the maze of lanes lined with independent shops, cool bars and restaurants than on the beltway beaches – especially with a dog in tow.

Brighton Dog Friendly Beaches
One of the best beach activities to enjoy with a dog is a walk along the shore. Brighton’s promenade is lined with colorful beach huts, restaurants and cafes, offering a great way to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Grab a coffee on your morning walk, sit by the seafront, and watch the city of Brighton come to life in front of you.
Brighton is famous for its picturesque streets, known as “the lanes.” These narrow streets are full of independent shops and vintage boutiques, as well as cafes and bars – and most of them are dog friendly! Around every corner there is something new to discover, encouraging you to further explore the labyrinthine maze of hidden courtyards and alleyways.
The Royal Pavilion is one of Brighton’s most popular attractions. The former royal residence combines Regency grandeur with Indian architecture and Chinese-inspired interiors. Although dogs are not allowed in the building, they are free to explore the Royal Pavilion Gardens and are well worth a visit. Gardens are a great place to relax, have a picnic or people watch.
Volk’s Electric Railway is the oldest electric railway in the world and runs the length of Brighton seafront from Palace Pier to the marina. Dogs are welcome to ride the open train on its short but scenic journey along the coast. There is also a small exhibition in the visitor center with a selection of authentic railway hats and clothing to try!

Brighton’s historic Open Market is home to over 50 stalls from local producers and makers selling regional goods, artisan crafts and seasonal treats. From small gardens to quirky parks, Brighton has some great green spaces to explore, and most of them are within walking distance of the city centre.
If you want a break from the sea crowd, you can visit the nearby South Downs, Hollingbury Woods or Friston Forest. Larger parks closer to Brighton include Stanmer, Easthill, Withdean and Hove Park.
Almost all beaches in the UK have restrictions on dogs between April and September, and Brighton is no different. The exception is that Brighton’s dog-friendly beaches are divided into sections.

There is quite clear signage especially along the promenade next to the main beach so the rules are not difficult to follow. You don’t have to go far to find a place to sit on the leash with your partner.

During my stay I grabbed a coffee on my morning walk along the promenade with the dog from The Coffee Shop and The Flour Pot. Both are great, but flour pot is the best.
With or without a dog, I don’t like shopping. However, what sets Brighton apart are its vintage shops, record stores, independent boutiques and antique emporiums; making the city a fantastic place to save.
If you want to pick up gifts or souvenirs, you will find independent shops and local makers in Brighton’s historic lanes known as The Lanes. Don’t skip North Laine where you’ll find all the high street favorites as well as more independent shops and boutiques. As with the rest of the UK, dogs are welcome in most shops in Brighton – just ask first!
There are plenty of dog-friendly accommodation in Brighton, from chain hotels to boutique BnBs. Places get booked up quickly during the height of the holiday season, so don’t leave a reservation anywhere until the last minute. Another problem is parking, which is notoriously hard to find in Brighton and expensive when you do! The most reasonable option is the London Road car park.
