First, it is a general decision. In terms of the size of the rig, we knew we wanted a small “every grocery store parking lot, every gas station” size. We knew we didn’t want a pickup truck for many reasons, but only because tall stairs seemed like a bad idea for a dog-sized dog.

We have been looking at the B+/C minute range for some time and have seriously considered the integration of LTV with the Murphy bed. We generally let the C-Class remain in the “need-car” size, and the smaller Murphy beds because there doesn’t seem to be room to move around under the bed. On the other hand, we refused the revel of 19 feet, which was perhaps too narrow for us to enjoy, especially for sitting. Finally, in the front we are looking for about 80 feet long, long enough to have plenty of room inside, short enough to clear the parking lot a few feet from the track. While we really value sleeping comfort, we felt that the floor plan did not work with the couch leaning against the bed. Otherwise there would be so many flat pillows. It also didn’t strike us as a loss of storage space for the bed or making the bed each night. For a long time we thought we would go for the Travato 59G with the corner Murphy bed: it really had a great floor plan to be able to store things under the bed, while keeping the rear door useful. He went so far as to find a detail for the 2019 model that was cooler-oriented – a detail that I (Tommy) really liked.
After reading other people’s experiences with the 59G, we finally convinced ourselves that the corner bed is not for us. It was too tall for our dogs to climb into theirs, and our dogs are too heavy to carry regularly (we already have 65+ pounds to lift Lily to get her into our Jeep, that’s enough). If you just have a winged animal, it will be quite different. For us, even if we always force our dogs to sleep on the floor, they will probably collect right below, really where you have to lower the high bed, and there will be many tails. And with our latest addition we now have three dogs in the 50-65 range – they take up a lot of space, and at least one of them is pretty much guaranteed to be there.
With all of the above, the floor plan with two beds and a walk-through missing in the middle, even if it meant the rear, was ridiculously open to the stern.

Most vans with two beds turn it into one big bed by installing a floorboard in the middle, but I doubt we’ll ever do that. We want to keep our nightly routine short and simple, like the usual arrival/departure.
During the day we plan to leave our bed in place, cover it with a blanket one day, and lie on the floor twice a day, like a dog’s bed at night.
While waiting for the review, we chose the Travato 59K, then a 2019 model or newer because of all the me- they come standard with. The new models are also dog-friendly: starting with the 2020.5, the walker boards have handles for attaching the leash. We decided to drop another price in the first year and look for less used equipment.
To save on costs and because we no longer have full time, we decided to avoid the Volta Lithium system. Without lithium it means there is no air conditioning if we leave the dog in the parking lot. We will submit a lithium battery as a DIY project later if needed for this use case. For normal use, we expect it to be much more mobile than our A-Class, so we believe we’ll be charging while driving most of the time. We also have solar power and a generator for the essentials we need with them if we are staying for long periods of time.

To give you an idea of how happy we are with the 59K, one of the biggest downsides for us seems to be that the outdoor shower is not equipped with hot water, so all the dirty dogs are washed with cold water. No, that’s a big no.
We found a used 59K with some options we really liked: heated pool and windows. The pool heaters (“hot water” in Winnebag parlance) help in the winter, and 2019 Travata fresh water pipes are already inside the log to keep it from freezing. Window blinds allow us to keep the windows open even in the rain, and keep them securely closed while they are slightly open. Also, the Travato ceiling fan has a rain cover and can be left on in the rain. After 1,800,000,000,000, we now have our first trip and the dogs are slowly getting used to it. Through experience they begin to find answers to some open questions.
I certainly do not know how the door behaves, but the dogs use it well, and the mouth opens well, I think.
Delta is still learning how to wait and snap like a weasel if he tries to break through, but he has greatly improved in his patience.

We were a little worried that the dogs might “move” the tracks, but they seem to be able to get everyone there if needed. They can also pass each other, and we can run around them if they stop or sit on the road.
Our dogs, at least so far, don’t jump off the road and into their beds. The bed ends up in the kitchen cupboards, so it’s nowhere to be put properly. The second bed is barrier free and the dogs can get in there and then easily cross the porch and want to be in the bed.
Our porch has a vinyl floor, which is uncomfortably slippery for dogs. When Lily jumped through the side door, she got up into the kitchen cupboard. We found the $8 hardware doormats to be unbreakable, the perfect size, and easy to cut as needed. We only had time with them and the dogs seemed very happy.
Our A-Class had a prominent exhaust in the back passenger corner, and the generator exhaust was on the front driver’s side. I was always worried that some unwary dog would give his ears ringing when we released the dog immediately after the ride, and the area near the fatigue generator was Moshi’s favorite spot.

In Travato, both were exhausted on the driver’s side, away from the area where the dogs are. They will also be less accessible to dogs as I doubt the dogs will find it under the first row as there is very little room. Moshi will be angry because he lost his room.
Lily is placed between the two seats as she guides us. She also drove in that fleet, and was standing in the Jeep almost in the center of the comfort room. The dog is a people person and wants to be close to us.
If there is no passenger, Lily will often jump into the passenger seat to keep watch. (And a quarter of the time, suggesting seatbelt reminders.) In the A-Class, she’ll sometimes sit on the passenger’s lap, all 65+ pounds of her to cling to the moisture from the side window. I don’t think it should be conceded with the shape of the cabin and the small seat.
Delta is more than wanting to sit in the back seat and look everywhere. 59K has good panoramic views and is happy about it.

Moshi, well… Moshi doesn’t like to drive. He absolutely hates getting into our Jeep and driving us around on busy roads. They will either hunt on the ground or on the bench, or they will try to hide under the steam and brake pedals. So we are working on it. At least iron on average a
