Best Dog Friendly Hikes Near Denver – I thought I would start my hike at Maroon Lake, one of the most popular spots in Colorado. Rising above Maroon Lake, the Maroon Bells are two of Colorado’s 14 mountains rising above 14,000 feet. This place is so beautiful and relaxing that you will see lots of people and babies throughout the day. You can park a few hundred feet from the lake or take the shuttle bus when you can’t drive the road to Maroon Lake. One thing to be sure of is to plan accordingly.
From Maroon Lake, you can follow the trail to Crater Lake. It is a short 2.3 mile walk to the lake. You can get a better idea of how many maroon bells there are here.

From Crater Lake, you can decide if you want to do a more difficult hike with distance and elevation. If this sounds like what you and your dog want, continue on the trail to Buckskin Pass. As you climb up to the tree line, the incredible views begin behind you. But when you get to the top, nothing beats the view from the other side of the road.

From the top of the pass, you can see many mountains and Snowmass Lake in the distance. When I first walked up the road to Buckskin Pass and saw Snowmass Lake in the distance, I knew I had to hike it one day. Of course, we decided to take Koda on this trip. And when you have time for it, if you want more adventure, plan for a long day hike (about 26 miles round trip) or stay overnight and jump into this great lake.
Hiking Maroon Bells Nature Reserve is an unforgettable experience with 360-degree views everywhere you walk.
Then go to places you wouldn’t expect to be anywhere like Colorado. The large sand dunes surrounded by mountains provide a unique walking route in the Great Sand Dunes National Park. There are no marked paths to the beach, so you can choose your own way and see the best views of the slopes and mountains around you. This is one of the few parks where dogs are allowed, so it is important to follow all the rules and regulations.
If you’re out on the slopes, be sure to try sand boarding or skiing. You can rent a small shop outside the park. This attraction may be more for people, but if you go in early summer, your kids will love running in the sand and then diving in Medano Creek. The sand can get very hot, so we recommend walking early and late in the day and wearing rain boots to protect your child’s feet.
Colorado Dog Hikes: Marshall Mesa Trailhead
There’s nothing like hiking with your dog in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The peaks and the bright blue lakes make this place perfect. I always want to come back and explore everything these mountains have to offer.
The 12.5 mile round trip and 2,900 foot elevation gain will take you to some of the most stunning lakes you will ever see. Start at Ice Lake, with its clear blue water, then named for the beautiful little island in the middle of the lake.
You can also extend your walk in this area by exploring the other lakes in the Ice Lake Basin. This area is a great place for backpackers.
You can’t make a list of the best hikes with your dog without mentioning some high peaks. When choosing such a mount, it is important to know your and your dog’s strengths. Mount Suniktau is a 13er or 13,000 foot mountain. It’s only a short hike, starting at Loveland Pass, with an elevation gain of nearly 12,000 feet, but it’s sure to get your heart pumping and your lungs working hard.

The views from peaks like Mount Sunichtau are some of my favorites, because you get to see so much of the Colorado mountains. Mount Sniktau offers views of Colorado’s 14ers as well as ski areas like Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin. When you stand on this mountain, you will feel like you are on top of the world. You will also be greeted by happy critters such as pikas and marmots on this walk, but be aware that your dog may try to follow them like mine.
Finally, we complete the list with one of the best “outside” walking spots. We love being close to God’s garden. Several trails in the park offer great views of the rock formations and Pikes Peak. This is a great place for short walks, but there are also many options for extending to longer walks. There are also several paved paths in the park, which are great places to go for a walk in the sun.
When hiking in Colorado with your dog, it is always important to research the area and understand the level of difficulty and distance. Also, be aware of the rules required for that category. For example, most of these hikes require dogs to be leased. Once you have planned your amazing trip, start your road trip and enjoy hiking with your child in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. We loved every trip we had in Colorado.
