The UK’s most dog-friendly beaches have been revealed, with new data taken from an online survey used to find Britain’s favourites.

With spring bringing the promise of warmer weather and April being National Pet Month, it’s a great time to get out with a four-legged friend.

First place was Durdle Door beach in Dorset with a dog-friendly score of 8.85 out of 10. “Described as an ideal seaside retreat for dogs and their owners, and the famous limestone cliffs are a dreamy backdrop for the resulting sports”. The results are based on a survey of 4,298 West Country beaches.

Another beach in Dorset, Main and War Beach, came second after scoring 8.3. Also known as the East Durdle Gate, this is a large bay protected from swells with calm waters – meaning there’s plenty of room for you and your dog to walk.

It’s joined by the Welsh seaside resort of Three Cliffs Bay in Glamorgan, the first sandy beach on the list. Here, the coast offers canyons with plenty of opportunities to explore.

Following in fourth place with 8.2 out of 10 is Pembrokeshire’s Marlous Sands. A long golden beach with a towering mountain in the background, it’s “a great photo opportunity with your baby,” the report says.

Rounding out the top five is Cookmere Haven Beach in East Sussex with a score of 8.06. A quiet section of rock faces the white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters.

Devon is home to the friendliest beaches on the list, with 22 out of 148.

The research comes to you from Shores, which analyzed Google rankings and research for 148 dog-free beaches to find the most popular spots. However, beaches that did not have a Google Maps rating in the survey were excluded from the study. A weighted average was calculated to obtain an overall rating before the standardized mean score was calculated.
