We were looking for off road camping where we could be with our dogs. With the Australia Day long weekend coming up, we decided to head to the Buckland Valley, about 4 hours from Melbourne on the Alpine Shire Highway, just south of Mt Buffalo. We wanted to spend some time here before choosing it as our Australia Day weekend destination. Our plan was simple – to pack, bring food and enough food for the first three days and we wouldn’t need to move. #done job!

We left Melbourne late at night. After 4 hours we were on the Alpine Highway and exited at Glen Bucklane; When you first get to the center roundabout you have the choice of going to Porpanka, Bright, Buckland Valley or Buffalo Mountain. The Buckland Valley is a scenic drive away from traditional holiday spots. The camp is easily accessible by two wheels; when you get further in and under the wheels you should find a loose gravel road.

We arrived late in the Buckland Valley and followed the maps to lead us to Ah Youngs Camp. This place is a large area of open land with amazing trees as tall as a city building. We knew we had found our destination; when we entered the camp from the road we saw nothing; it was pitch black but all we had were campfires roaring from other people’s camps. It was a welcome sight after a long dark journey.
The native birds that live in the area are alert at all times. We heard a chainsaw cutting in the middle of the night. It sounded like someone cutting wood and continued for some time. Was it strange to think that someone would do something like that in the middle of the night? The next day, after talking to some locals at the camp, they explained that lyre birds are native to the area. It’s worth hearing in the morning, the cockatoos squawking like crazy birds. We love them and the kookaburras sounded like we were having a party in the trees around us (I was in my element) and the boys, the smells of the forest, the sound of the wind blowing through the pine needles, the smell of the river and I want to go. Literally a 2 minute walk down the hill and the river is at your feet.
It is a dog camp located in a national forest. The Buckland River flows nearby and there are swimming spots where you can enjoy a hot summer’s day. It’s an open space with enough space to set your shop apart from others. With shaded campsites on the outskirts, you can have plenty of space to feel like you’re on your own.
The camp is full of grass seed. I always carry nail clips and tweezers as part of our “dog first aid kit” just in case one of the guys ends up breaking a nail; it can happen so quickly when walking and running along rivers. You will have no choice but to cut it short.

Grooming: If you have a dog with a curly coat, or if you have a dog that needs regular grooming and you’re here in late spring or summer, you may want to ask the groomer to cut your dog nice and short. . If you have a nice short coat, you can see if you need a quick visit for a cutting, seed or tick.
Bright is just down the road and you can visit a great shop, walk along the river with your dog and relax. It is also the best city for your shopping needs. Bright Brewery offers a great pub lunch and great beers to quench your thirst. You can comfortably sit outside with your dog and watch people enjoying the river.
There are wineries and berry farms throughout the Alpine district; honestly, there are plenty of places to walk, visit and explore with your dog. Buckland Valley is a great location for a base camp. I love the drive, its impressive mountain range of hops and historic tobacco drying sheds now converted into rental accommodation.
