Looking at the UK’s 20 most populous cities, we rated each based on the percentage of dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. We then combine and rank each metric to provide an overall rating out of 100 for dog-friendly business for each city.
Brighton and Hove has more dog-friendly catering businesses than anywhere else in the UK. 4% of restaurants in the area allow dogs inside, while 4.3% of cafes do too – and they may even offer dog snacks, if they’re well-behaved. When it comes to pubs, 7.7% like dogs to soak up the atmosphere, but hotels really take the crown: 33.6% will allow you and your dog to enjoy a stay together.
And Edinburgh loves dogs. 16.3% of hotels allow dogs to stay overnight, while in Sheffield just under 14.1%. However, one thing Steel City loves dogs in pubs: 11.9% of establishments allow dogs to drink water while you enjoy a beer.
London has the most dog-friendly hospitality, but only 17th overall, while Wakefield is home to the most dog-friendly pubs – 12.5% of the total.

Using the same dog metric, we also looked at the world’s most populous cities to see how they compare.
Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has more dog-friendly businesses than any other city. It offers visitors 28.3% dog-friendly hotels, as well as 6.1% pubs, 6.3% cafes and 4.7% restaurants.
Mexico City is the second best place to chase tail, with 22.6% of the city’s hotels being dog-friendly and 5.6% of pubs being paw-friendly.
Brussels completes the top three. Not only is this city great to explore, but it’s also great to see from a dog’s perspective. A staggering 32.3% of hotels allow dogs, while 7.8% of pubs will also allow dogs.
