When you travel through downtown Fort Collins, be sure to stop at the Downtown Transit Center and visit the resting place of Annie the Railroad Dog. Annie is a historic figure in Collinstown, famous for her friendly presence at Mason St train station. here in the city. Adopted by railway workers in the 1930s, Annie became very famous locally as she greeted everyone who got off the train to Fort Collins for ten years. You can also visit her bronze statue at the Old Town Library at 201 Peterson Street or walk Annie’s Walk in Library Park.

We took the “full dog car” to explore Ouray and Silverton and discover beautiful nature and cool mountain air.
It was an interesting trip for us. Our home base is at 6,000 feet, so we’re no stranger to altitude, but we live in a semi-arid climate, and the mountains of Colorado get more rain and snow – our house is often dry. you can see clouds and rain in northern Colorado.
On this trip, we went from the high desert to the mountain pine forest in a short afternoon.
Dog Friendly Colorado
Our first stop was Silverton, a colorful town of less than 700 residents at 9,318 meters above sea level with many historic buildings that have survived from the mining days. There are a few bars and restaurants for tourists, but not enough tourists to keep them open (especially during the COVID period), so be aware of the opening hours if you plan to eat here.
Silverton’s main attraction is probably the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This historic steam iron has been in continuous operation since 1881. For better or worse, our family motto has always been “If I can’t take my dogs, I don’t go” – therefore we cannot say that we have experienced the. rail, but we hear it’s great! Definitely something to consider if you don’t have pets or want to put them in all-day doggie daycare.
Outside the train, local businesses are mostly hotels, guesthouses, gift shops and one gas station. Don’t forget to check out Silverton City Park (aka Harmony Park) halfway across town for the musical instruments (which we didn’t get a photo of anyway – I guess we were too busy playing!)
Walking around town, we found a campsite a few miles outside of Silverton along a lake in a designated dispersed campsite.

Outside of some designated areas, mountain roads are not suitable for caravans. if you have an RV or a short 4×4 van with good ground clearance, there are probably some great spots deeper on the forest roads, but most of the others are for neighbors and considering the fire rings, the areas this is very busy seasonally. Even if you have an off-road vehicle, make sure you know where you’re going, and it’s best to travel with two vehicles: some of these mountain passes are some of the steepest Jeep roads in the US and may not they are much wider. . the vehicle turns safely.
Cell signal quality seems to be largely a matter of luck in these mountains, whether your campsite has a direct line of sight to a cell tower or not. Of course, you’re more likely to get a good signal further than a kilometer or two from the highway. On average, we were surprised at how well we managed to find a good signal, work remotely from nice campsites, and suffered mostly on weekend nights when the cell towers were overloaded .
From Silverton, head north toward Ouraya on the Million Dollar Highway. Part of it is carved straight from the face of the mountain and there are few handrails due to the heavy snow. This means an almost vertical drop, a thousand feet down, sometimes just outside the white line of the road. In the spring, before they have time to repair the road, you may notice that pieces of the road have fallen from water erosion. There can be no error here.
Trucks use this route to serve mountain communities, but personally I wouldn’t want to drive a class A or a large trailer this way. It can be done, but it’s not fun. Please note the recommended speed of 25 mph
