However, owning a dog completely limits the areas you can explore in national parks. If you’re traveling with your dog to a National Park, we recommend taking a friend with you to explore the parts of the park that you won’t want to miss. Conditions were rare to leave Leo in the car, as parking lots were usually crowded and shade was rare. That’s why we had to be with us all the time. We stopped at shops and visitor centers and hit trails you can’t miss. This often meant sitting and relaxing with Leo for long periods of time while the other person went on an adventure. I still liked it because Leo liked to meet people and he liked to talk.
Such an environment is not easy for unnatural dogs. Although many are very adept at asking for permission to see a lion multiple times in each park, people tend to keep lions as pets. The reason we didn’t bring Nick was because I couldn’t have fun because I always had to be careful with Leo whenever possible. Yes, I was still protective of it, but the reality is that in a park with hundreds of people, it’s nearly impossible to see everything while enjoying the park. Not only do you need to know how to protect your dog from unwanted contact, but you also need to know that not everyone likes dogs and some are afraid of them. So part of my job was to look at people and react to and respect those who were arsar, so I didn’t have to go around them.

It turned out to be a great park to explore with Leo. He was allowed to shoot many scenes. It wasn’t as hot in the highlands as some of the areas we explored. There were many roads he was not allowed to travel, so we took turns talking to him. He was allowed to ride on the paved road between sunset and sunrise. It was a scenic half-mile hike, but a pleasant walk that we could all enjoy together. We stopped at the visitor center and picked up a Bark Ranger badge for his collection.

Parking in this park was very difficult. Most of the spectators were looking for a place to park 5-6 cars. So if you’re in peak season, be prepared to look for more than you’d like.

We stayed at Best Friends Inn in Kanab, Utah! Best hotel I’ve ever stayed in with a pet. Pets are not only loved and fed! No pet fees. The private dog park is fenced with a sprinkler board, has a pet wash area, a bath for the kids after a long day of hiking, a fireplace, and outdoor tables where we love to hang out. the color of the desert sunset covered the sky. They gave us great tips for eating out in the city with an outdoor patio for Leo, as well as dog-friendly information for our next trip.
This was the hardest of the 4 parks we visited while walking with our dog. The main view of the park is accessible only through the public park, where dogs are not allowed. The area around the visitor center was ideal for Leo because it had good walking paths and shade.

The Parus trail was the only trail that allowed dogs into the park, but look at the area near that sign, the entire trail was covered by a fox, I was scared of him, he almost shook one of them. I kept trying to save it, which was very frustrating, so we quickly turned back. I’m sure he’ll be a great dog at other times of the year too!
On the plus side, the entrance and exit to the park was full of spectacular views, making it definitely worth the visit. However, to see the best of this park, it’s probably best to find a daytime option.
The Grand Canyon had the most opportunities to explore with Leo! Usually he was allowed to be outside, on a ferry or in some building. There were many avenues in fields and perspectives that we could explore together. The park’s Grand Canyon Kennel Park has a dog kennel that we can go to if we want to hike without it, and one of the park’s hotels, Yavapai Lodge, has pet-friendly rooms.
We had a great time staying for a week before the morning classes started. By the time we were ready to leave the visitor center, the parking lot was full and busy. I definitely recommend going early/low season to give yourself more time to explore and find parking.

We stayed at the Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell in Arizona because we wanted to see both Antelope Canyon and the Horse Band, and our original plan was to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, but missed the opening day. Last year’s snow closed this side of the park for a week. The hotel was great! We were very welcome with our dog, they have a $75 pet fee and their policy is “2 dogs for 50 pounds” but not only were they great with Leo, they were very welcoming and made us feel like special guests. They welcomed us with gifts and toys for Leo and for us too! The hotel is perfectly located for a sunset drink, as Levi’s are allowed to hang out on the patio.
We were surprised that the Paige Rim Trail ran through the hotel! Thanks to that, every morning and evening we walked 10 kilometers without sitting in the car. Check out our next post where we’ll describe our outdoor adventures with Leo.
