These are two questions I get from my friends when planning a trip to Joshua Tree. Unfortunately the answer is no. Yes and no. You’ll definitely see dogs in Joshua Tree, but your activities will be limited to the actual national park. By the way, I didn’t bring a dog.
The best months to visit Joshua Tree with friends are from October to March. Winter is safer and more enjoyable because the temperatures are cooler, providing a more comfortable experience for you and your dog. During these months, the desert landscape radiates its magical aura without the threat of scorching heat.
Winter is an obvious reason for dog hiking in Joshua Tree, as it reduces the risk of hot pavement. The desert sun is unrelenting, and during the hot months, the ground can easily burn your pet’s paws. Therefore, if you are hiking outside of the recommended months, it is important to stick to cooler times of the day. Always carry water to keep yourself and your dog hydrated.

If you want to camp, there are many camping options. (The temperature dropped to 20 degrees when we visited, which I’m afraid is too cold for a small dog.)
Dogs are not allowed on park roads, but are allowed on unpaved roads (areas with little traffic). Joshua Tree Point is Glacier Point; This is due to the absence of many important features such as Maroon calling. This provides the experience of walking on an unpaved road like walking on a regular hiking trail. Everywhere you look, the desert is beautiful.
I especially like the Bighorn Pass Trail and the Geology Tour Trail. These two trails are the only dog-friendly hiking trails in Joshua Tree.
If you want to walk here, check your map (provided at the entrance center when you pay to enter) or GPS. You can drive along this road as much as you like, parking your car on the side of the road and driving through the mountains. Both of these roads are well maintained – you can see the roads in the picture above. When parking, remember to pull over to allow other vehicles to pass.
Backpacking Joshua Tree National Park
Stargazing in Joshua Tree is truly amazing. “Civilization” is nearby, but there is not much light pollution. Even though the night was cold, I wrapped myself in a blanket and looked at the stars with the wind. This can be done anywhere.
Lastly, the Cholla Cactus Garden is not a dog-friendly trail, but the “garden” is a variety of cholla cacti, and you don’t have to walk the trail to enjoy it. They can be seen across a street where there is no parking or roadway. Studying cacti doesn’t take much time. When we left, my husband parked Ty and completed the “switch” which I explored for 5 minutes.

Having the right equipment is essential when dog walking in Joshua Tree. First things first, make sure you bring plenty of water for yourself and your canine companion. The desert environment can be very dry and staying hydrated is important. The collapsible water bowl makes it easy for your dog to drink on the go. For myself, I carry water with an MSR Dromlite 2L. Drone bags are better than water bottles because you can walk while drinking water. No need to carry water on your back and put it back in your bag.

Then bring a strong leash and a trash bag. Even if your dog wants to roam free, it’s important to keep him on a leash so he doesn’t disturb wildlife or fragile desert plants. For other travelers, trash bags are essential for cleaning up after your pet.
You’ll also need a good hiking backpack to store all your gear and your dog. Osprey also makes very comfortable backpacks, but I really like the Topo Designs Mountain Pack (similar here).
