Dogs love camping. Suddenly the whole world has a garden and everything smells so good! Unfortunately, however, dog-friendly camping options in NSW are quite limited – most campsites are in national parks and dogs are not allowed there because they are afraid of wildlife. However, there is a dog camp. Here are some of our tips for you and your dog to escape the cat race.
At the bottom of Barrington Tops National Park is a small place called Coachwood Camping Area. Located in Chichester State Forest, it has a rainforest feel, swimming pool and some gentle walks. This is the primo playground for your furry friend.
Coachwood Camping Area – first come, first served and it’s free! There is a sink, a fireplace and a long toilet, but you must bring your own water. 2WD vehicles can handle it, but be careful in the rain or at low speeds.
North but still back up to Barrington Tops, Riverwood Downs Campground. If you want to indulge and enjoy a river cruise while still being in touch with nature, then look no further.

The campsite is located in the Monkerai Valley on 750 hectares of land with 5 km of mountain river frontage for drinking.
Riverwood Downs has everything you need, even a spa (not sure if dog leads are allowed) and an onsite bar and grill. However, this site is not free, so reserve it in advance.

How about camping on the edge of the second largest canyon in the world? Well, you can make it a reality with a pup, only in the Blue Mountains at Glen Davis Campground. It’s basically a park with a barbecue and a toilet block, but hey, what do you need?
This free camping area is a very simple but fantastic base from which to explore the oil field ruins in the area.
Attention! This campsite is different from the nearby Coorongooba campsite which is in a national park and is not dog friendly.

Wee Jasper Reserves offers a quiet, off-the-grid retreat where you can spend quality time with your best friend. There are five different wilderness areas, river hikes and fishing spots, all in alpine bliss.
Dogs must be kept on a lead, not least because the surrounding forest may have undergrowth that is not dog friendly. Water is available in all areas except Carey Reserve.
Pines grown in the Wingello State Forest have a true North American flavor. You can camp at the dog-friendly HQ campsite, which is a great base for nearby hiking and cycling. Did someone say tracking dog?!
Camping at Wingello State Forest is free, but you have to be independent because the restroom is basically just a facility.

That’s strange. Delicate Camping on the beach, right next to Goolwah National Park, maintains its dog-friendly status by being located in Goolwah Regional Park. Put it in the sand? Because Dog surfing? Good! Dog hair in your tent? You bet
Delicate Campground doesn’t take reservations, but you’ll want to arrive early during peak times. It’s $24 per seat (including two people, extra for extra) and well worth the money. You must bring your own food and BYO water, but toilets are available.

This is a quintessentially Australian area near Mount Jerusalem National Park but has a Garden of Eden feel to it with peacocks roaming the fields and wild macadamia nuts and grapes to choose from. Maca Camping Area is quite close to Byron Bay which is connected to Bluesfest, Splendor in the Grass and Camping Falls Festival and the prices are more than double. Avoid this time if you are looking for peace.
North of Taree is a dog-friendly campsite where you can sit under the rubber with your pooch. The site is grassy and open, surrounded by footpaths and starry skies above. What more could you ask for?

Coopernook Forest Park has toilets and a barbecue, but you must bring your own water. This site is free without a reservation, and since it’s just on the Pacific Highway, it’s a good place to stop on the way.
Twenty clicks south of the windy fishing town of Eden lies the Scrubby Creek Picnic Area. Boyd State Forest Native Prairie offers super basic dog-friendly camping. It’s the perfect place to “sit”, “shake”, “wave” and “bring me a beer by the campfire”.
Expect a table, a fire and not much else. In addition to dog-friendly camping, Scrubby Creek is a great stop for spontaneous campers on a coastal trip.Â
