Dog Friendly Day Trips – We call this trip “Link’s List” because this trip was created with our beloved friend in mind.
Our dog, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we love road trips. In short, jumping in the car is the most affordable way to travel with him (and we take Lincoln almost everywhere).

Lincoln takes you to New England on this trip because the hot summers are great, the outdoor activities are plentiful, and you’ll find some of the best dog-friendly national parks in America.

During the summer, take advantage of longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you might find in many other states this time of year. Or take a walk in the fall and take advantage of the fall foliage in one of the world’s best places to hike.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long week camping in the Schodok area of Ikeda National Park in early August, three weeks in Lake Placid, NY in mid to late August, one month in Kempton, NH in September, three. weeks in. Ellsworth, ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
It is not necessarily a bad time in New England during these months. Sure, the summer months can get hot at night, but make sure your rental is air-conditioned and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as people who don’t live in Texas, so our tolerance for heat is probably higher than those who live up north year-round. That said, we use air conditioning. Except we don’t. .everything, so in that sense, our patience is really low, haha!)
Dog-friendly Road Trip Ideas
However, we will say that if you want to plan a trip to see the beautiful fall foliage, aim for the second week of October. Although the locations will be busy for locations (ie Kankamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the views will be worth it!
RTL Tips: Do you want more time walking or on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Do you want to enjoy a pleasant autumn walk with warm apple cider in your hand? Visit in October. Want cool weather but less crowds? Visit in September.
Lincoln is definitely a fan of the trips we can take in the car because it means it’s infinitely easier for him to join us. If you are near any place on this road trip, we recommend it. Exit to the nearest point of this walk and make a complete loop back home.
However, if you can’t get here by car and you have a dog that is fine on planes, you can fly to Boston Airport and rent a car when you land. If you are flying, we recommend adjusting this route for a while and go to Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend this itinerary as a traditional road trip, where you stay in different places at each stop. You can check out camps near any destination or stay in nearby towns.

For Stowe, consider Smuggler’s State Park Campground or Stowe Village. (You can check it out about 40 minutes into Burlington. Downtown Burlington is dog friendly!)
For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out Blue Hill Mountain at Sunset. It’s beautiful, dog friendly, and 1/100 the crowds of Acadia. competition!
Lincoln (the town not to be confused with our dog of the same name) is a hot spot in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. This makes it a great place to start walking with your dog.

You could easily spend a week exploring this part of New Hampshire on your own, as there are so many dog-friendly trails and things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)
But since we plan to spend only one day on this trip to enjoy the white mountains, here are our best recommendations.
This is free because you can drive the Concamagus Highway on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (So every time you go on a road trip, come back to this section. If you haven’t done the full stretch of this hike, consider taking a two-hour or longer hike on the Kankamagus Highway during your stay Lincoln).
If you come in the sunset, the Concamagus highway will be one of the best drives of your entire trip. And if it is not in the fall, it will be
10 Dog-friendly Day Trips In Northern California 2021
The Kankamagus Highway is 34 miles between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. It is one of the most popular trails in New Hampshire and one of the best places in America to see fall foliage. While there are many views and roads on this beautiful road that can keep you busy all the time, we recommend that you only stop at a few views and don’t take any of the roads on this road. (We have a better time next time!) Note: Visiting in the fall? stand up This drive fills up quickly, so either go at night or set the alarm early to avoid long lines and traffic to your next destination. Concamagus Highway is great, but it’s definitely not your only activity for the day!
Let’s get you and your cat out of the car and into the forest! Hiking was the activity that kept us very busy during our month in New Hampshire. We check every weekend and most weekends. Spending time outdoors on the trails is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend going to Welch-Dicky Mountain. This approximately 4.4 mile loop is an amazing half day hike with mountain views. It is dog friendly, good exercise and fun if you like the contrast of the terrain between exposed rock faces and wooden paths.
If you are looking for this trail in its entirety, look for the Welch-Dicky Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Rock Ledge” or “Welch and Dicky Mountain”). Along the entire circular path, you will have a view of the beach

Both Welch and Dickey rocks. We recommend going clockwise to climb the hill section. (This is especially helpful if it’s wet or you’re visiting during planting season when there are leaves on the ground. Take your time, the area may be blooming.)
