“He likes to go out to eat with me and he seems really happy when I take him,” says Matthews. “Besides, it’s fun for me.”
Shake Shack is a casual food chain that offers American classics like hamburgers, hot dogs and shakes at various locations in New York (and around the world). Matthews and Cosmo ate at one in Madison Square Park. He explains that the environment is calm and comfortable. Dogs are welcome outside, and Shake Shack has a special dog menu that includes bags of bone cookies and pooch-ini cups. Cosmo brings two paws to the pooch-ini cup! Although the P.L.A.Y. Located in Chelsea, Cookshop offers fresh American cuisine with a little bit of everything from chicken and waffles to fish tacos. The restaurant has a large outdoor seating area where dogs are welcome, with water bowls for four-legged diners. While he ate, Cosmo got bone broth in the shape of a bone and homemade sweet potato muffins with peanut butter and cream cheese frosting. Matthews says he shot everything and quickly fell asleep in the carrier while she continued to enjoy her meal.
Located in Brooklyn, Pig is a barbecue place that is always full of people – and their pets! Matthews describes the environment as relaxed and lively, with dogs everywhere and plenty of open space to walk. She ordered the sampler plate, which included ribs and a small portion of three other meats on the menu. She also likes the pork burger, which she says is popular with the locals. Although the restaurant didn’t make food specifically for dogs, Cosmo was happy to steal a few pieces of meat from his mother’s plate – after Matthews made sure it was safe for him.

Bar Primi is a modern Italian restaurant in Noho on Bowery, close to major car dealerships, small clothing boutiques and coffee shops. Matthews says her menu favorites include the spaghetti pomodoro, ricotta crostini and kale salad. Dogs are allowed to sit on the sidewalk. During the meal, Cosmo surprised the restaurant staff, receiving lots of petting and attention.
Located on NYC’s Upper East Side, Quality Eats offers a modern take on the classic American diner. Guests can expect innovative menu options such as grilled bacon prepared with peanut butter and jalapeño jelly, all served in a pleasant and relaxed environment. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area. Although there is no dog menu, Matthews gave Cosmo a bite of vanilla ice cream and a milkshake plush toy from P.L.A.Y. to keep him busy while she indulges in a selection of sweet treats.

We recommend bringing your pup to NYC during our hottest months – around April through October. There are many terraces and a wide selection of pavement seats to enjoy when the weather is good. It is also much better to visit the parks in the sun than in the cold!
Almost all restaurants allow dogs on their outdoor tables. If you walk around the Upper West Side (especially Amsterdam or Columbus), Chelsea (especially 8th and 9th avenues), the Easttown, or the Westtown, you will find many places to sit and enjoy with your dog!

Traveling with a small dog is very comfortable in the city! The subways allow dogs if they are in a crate – and the word “carried” is very loosely defined. I carry Alice in a small flexible bag that I fold up and put in my purse. She sits on my lap and looks at the other passengers until they smile at her or come to pet her 🙂 I have seen much bigger dogs in special situations, a bag in the subway, and I have also seen many dogs on the Train without a bag at all. Most cyclists don’t seem to mind as long as the dog is well behaved and you’re not riding in the lead! As far as I can tell, if your dog is not in a crate, the worst that can happen is that you will be asked to leave the subway or pay a $25 fine. This would only happen if you happened to see an NYPD officer on your way who wanted to take the time to issue a fine.
NYC cabs are supposed to take all riders with pets — but sometimes they refuse. If this happens, wait for the next taxi you see and they will probably accept your dog without a problem. Alice and I also use Lyft. After requesting a ride, I text the driver and ask if it’s okay if I have a small dog on my lap – they almost always say it’s okay.
Most businesses allow dogs as long as they don’t serve food. Alice goes shopping with me all the time – especially at Zara, Old Navy and Home Goods. He has great taste 🙂 So if you want to shop in SoHo or along 5th Ave, you will find many stores that welcome your dog too. Liquor stores are also dog friendly (I’ve never met a liquor store in town that doesn’t let Alice in) and they usually have puppies!
Many liquor stores and wine stores host tastings, which would be a great dog-friendly activity. I recommend Roma Liquors on Amsterdam & W 95th St or Columbus Avenue Wine & Spirits. They always have friendly staff and they make dinner for Alice (she pulls me to the door when we walk by) and often do wine tastings!

Starbucks locations and other coffee shops around town are very cool with dogs coming in with their humans to order. I often order through the app and pop in with Alice for a drink on our way to Central Park. If you’re on the Upper West Side, go to the Starbucks at 86th & Columbus and hope to meet the amazing barista who draws pictures of dogs on puppy cups!
Some Duane Reade and CVS locations don’t care if you bring a dog, but others say no dogs or bring your puppy – it’s up to the manager.
A lot of these places are on the Upper West Side because we spend a lot of time in the hood. We are also spreading to other parts of the city!
