Best Dog Friendly Bay Area Hikes
Dog-friendly, the Cataract Falls rising near Mount Tamalpais is a spectacular waterfall. This is a challenging, stair-climbing trail that breaks through stalls and rewards visitors with over two miles of waterfalls. The trail follows Cataract Creek as it descends Mount Tamalpais and flows into Alpine Lake. This is a good hike all year round, but its full beauty is on display in the wet months. In winter and spring the ferns are lush, the trees are covered in moss, the waterfalls are flowing, and the wildflowers are abundant. As the year progresses, the plants fall and the maple trees shine with autumn colors.

Tourists flock to the World’s End Coastal Trail to see the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands, but dogs love this trail too! Many people choose this hike as a short return trip, but active dogs need different areas in this 3.5 mile loop. The dirt road begins at Sutro Bath, and hikers pass several landmarks before seeing Mile Rock Beach, passing through eucalyptus groves and winding past a hidden historic battery.
There are always happy dogs walking this 3.6 mile trail in Belmont. This easily adaptable method has two loops. The short inner loop is a heavily forested trail that follows the shores of Water Dog Lake at the bottom. Although many owners allow their dogs to swim in the pool, the water can be wet and dirty and may not be healthy for the dog. It’s always nice to sit on a bench or take a short stroll and watch the ducks swim.
The Outer Sun Loop (Lake Loop Trail and John Brooks Trail) is a wide trail popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The trail winds along the top of the crater and gets little sun, and in the summer months it can be hot. While parts of the outer loop are shaded, most trails are unshaded.
On a clear day, Sweeney Ridge offers a spectacular view of the San Francisco Bay and beautiful beaches and the Pacific Ocean. This challenging 11.2 mile trip to the Pacific includes both the Nike Missile site and the San Francisco Bay Discovery site. The route is a combination of smooth cobblestone roads, paved paths, and a narrow single track that cuts through the beach. Depending on the season, hikers may be lucky enough to spot a hare or two dart along the trail. Pedestrians can find their way through several points, but my personal favorite is the entrance at the back of the Shelldance Orchid Gardens.

With more than 1,900 acres of protected areas, the dog-friendly Adobe Creek Trail in the Palo Alto Baylands is a birdwatching and family destination. The gentle 7-mile trail begins at the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Interpretive Center and winds around the salt marshes and mudflats of the Palo Alto Baylands. For a shorter walk, choose the 1.7-mile Byxbee Hills and Mayfield Slough Walk.
The landscape of the Baylands wetlands changes with the tides, but the bird watching is still amazing, especially during migration. A good portion of the Adobe Creek Palo Alto Baylands Trail stretches between two slats, giving hikers opportunities to fly on both sides of the trail. On one side of the road, hundreds of ducks could be seen happily swimming and storming the calm water, while on the other side of the road, Sand Loons gently scrape the mud with their beaks.
Is whale watching with your dog your idea of a perfect afternoon? Then head to the Devil’s Slide Trail for a relaxing 3.5-mile stretch of beach. Dog-friendly hidden trail between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay popular with hikers and bikers. With epic views year-round, the Devil’s Slide Trail that runs along Old Highway 1 is the best place to see whales on a clear day. The trail sits atop a cliff and offers hikers stunning views and the soothing sound of waves crashing on the rocks below. On a sunny day, you may be lucky enough to see a gray or humpback whale breaching or displaying its fins as it dives into the ocean. Many benches along the way make this a great place to rest, enjoy the view and catch the sun.
You don’t have to leave the city to find some great dog-friendly hiking trails. Glen Canyon Park is a 70-acre canyon split between the Glen Park and Diamond Heights neighborhoods of San Francisco. This 1.7-mile round trip to Glen Canyon Park is a dog-friendly trail that passes over large cliffs and dips into the giant Bay Trees on the canyon floor. As you cross Islais Creek, one of San Francisco’s few flowing rivers, you may forget you’re still in the middle of the city.

This easy two-mile trail along the cliffs of Moss Beach is also called the Mavericks Cliffs Trail because of the great lookout point above the famous Mavericks surf break. Even when Mavericks’ waves aren’t breaking record, the hike to Pillar Point offers great views of Half Moon Bay Harbor, the nearby coastal mountain farms, and Pillar Point Air Force Base.
You’ll want to bring binoculars as the bird and whale watching is best from the top of the bluff. Various species of seabirds can be seen, with eagles and raptors hunting on the cliffs and marshes. If it’s not whale watching season, you can watch the seals. The sheltered waters and beaches of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve can be seen from the cliffs, and at low tide seals gather on the rocks below.
San Francisco’s Presidio National Park has 24 miles of hiking trails that pass through eucalyptus groves, past beaches, and skirt historic dunes. While not all park trails and beaches are dog-friendly, there are certainly plenty of trails to choose from. This 8 mile loop is one of my favorite trails in the Presidio. During this trip you will see cypress groves and flower dunes. You will walk along Baker Beach, the only nudist beach in San Francisco. You will visit not one, but two Andy Goldsworthy sculptures, and last but not least, you will be treated to a stunning view of the Golden Gate Bridge as it curves over the dramatic cliffs of the sea.
