In this post, I want to take a look at the most dog-friendly destinations in the West, focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with a pet (I know because I travel here all the time)! In these states, I love finding places that go above and beyond when it comes to dog-friendliness: meaning, great dog parks or dog-friendly beaches, great pet-friendly hotels, and a laid-back city vibe for friendly animals. adventures. And I found some great places like Bend, Oregon and Carmel in California…and many more. Join me and my dog Dylan as we search for the “Best Dog Friendly Destinations on the West Coast”.
While Cannon Beach is my only dog-friendly beach destination in Oregon, be aware: almost every beach in Oregon is dog-friendly, with far fewer rules and restrictions than beaches in California! Translation: The Oregon Coast is ideal for a dog-friendly road trip. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.
I love Cannon Beach for so many reasons: the charming town, the dozens of great restaurants, the coffee (Sleepy Monk!!), the many top-notch pet-friendly hotels, and of course: the beach, which is 100% pet-friendly domestic. No belts needed here!! Oregon is more relaxed than California in this regard. And the views of Haystack Rock will amaze you, especially at sunset. Take a walk on Ocean Avenue with your dog, enjoy a bowl of chowder on one of the many outdoor patios, and stop by the adorable neighborhood pet store: Puppy Love by the Sea.
***My Pick for Best Pet Friendly Hotel in Cannon Beach: This is a mix of Ocean Lodge & Surfsand Resort. Both are upscale beach hotels and very pet friendly. Ocean Lodge rooms are large and make the most of the views ~ but are close to Surfsand town and Haystack Rock, the rooms are comfortable, and their Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite place in town (and offers room service)…
14 Awesome Dog-friendly Midwest Road Trip Destinations
Bend is my current home in America, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever lived anywhere more pet-friendly. Not only does Bend’s amazing dog park put California dog parks to shame, but every restaurant in town with a patio is dog-friendly, including: St. Mary’s School. Francis McMenamin (pub, brewery, cinema, concert venue, cigar bar and hotel all converted from former Catholic schools), Naked Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel…..& and many others.
Bend has more dog-friendly parks, hotels and restaurants per capita than any other city on this list! Dylan is pictured here on the famous Deschutes River Trail in downtown Bend.
*** My pick for the best pet friendly hotel in Bend: Tetherow Golf Resort. At Tethero, you have a luxury golf resort with spectacular mountain views ~ and you’re only a 5-minute drive from downtown Bend and the famous Old Mill District. This is the best place for pets to stay in the city. Alternatively, head to Sunriver Resort, 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family resort areas in the US.
Carmel Main Beach is my favorite dog beach in the world: the legendary Pebble Beach is on the right, and if you follow the crescent beach to the left, you’ll find cypress trees framing your view. Million dollar homes of all types…from beautiful, cottage style to modern and contemporary. There’s a reason Clint Eastwood lives here: There’s something special about Carmel.
11 Dog-friendly Beaches In South Devon
And the city loves dogs: they’re welcome everywhere ~ but I especially like the cozy outdoor patio of Forge on Forest, with a special menu for dogs…
Carmel isn’t the only place on Monterey Bay with stunning ocean views: head to Pacific Grove and walk along the shore for similar views…
*** My top pick for a dog-friendly hotel in Carmel: The Lodge at Pebble Beach. Yes, it’s expensive~ but according to my parents and the housekeeper: Every room here is pet-friendly! And you can bring any size dog. For a cheaper option in Carmel, try Doris Day’s Cypress Inn for pups.
I grew up in Orange County and met some friends last week at Pacific City, a new outdoor center in Huntington Beach. When I was on my way home for Christmas, I took Dylan with me ~ which meant taking him to the mall with me… and boy, was I surprised at how pet friendly he was! Upscale Store invited us in, he had coffee with us and we all ate on Simji’s terrace, overlooking the pier and the sea. I would go back in a heartbeat! And there’s another reason to visit Huntington with your dog: It’s the only off-leash beach in Orange Country.
Best Dog-friendly Lakes In California
***My top dog friendly hotel pick in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach. Kimpton’s is beautiful and always dog friendly…they even offer dog happy hours! It’s incredibly romantic, with an ocean view complemented by a pale blue color palette ~ and you’re only a block away from the pier, Main Street, and the ocean. And Huntington Dog Beach is just a few miles north…
San Diego has not one, but two off-leash dog beaches, and both are in busy areas: Del Mar and Coronado. Dylan and I tested Del Mar Dog Beach last year, just south of Encinitas. Although it’s not as big as Carmel Beach: it’s still amazing. Happy dogs run in and out of the water, people are relaxed and friendly, parking is easy with plenty of spots right on the road at the beach entrance. Coronado Dog Beach has pristine white sand and the historic, pet-friendly Hotel del Coronado is just steps away.
Coronado Dog Beach is one of the best places to play with your dog on the sand in Southern California.
***My Top Dog Friendly Hotel in San Diego: San Diego is huge, so it depends on where you want to stay. For North County, try L’Auberge Del Mar, which accepts two dogs of any size. If you’re downtown in the Gaslamp, try the contemporary Hotel Indigo with its trendy rooftop bar. And if you want to stay near Coronado’s legendary dog beach, check out Hotel del Coronado ~ where three restaurants are pet-friendly! (Dogs up to 40 pounds only at Dell….)
15 Best Dog-friendly Places In Chicago — Runstreet
This rounds up my picks for the best dog friendly destinations on the West Coast! I want to add something: More and more of the travel stories I read these days seem to be written by A.I. Or by editors who have never visited the places they recommend. One thing’s for sure: every place on this list I’ve visited in the past year, so my recommendations are timely and for 2020 and beyond!
I’ve been on a road trip between California and Oregon every year since 2010 with Dylan~ so these are all places I love to visit and look forward to returning to year after year.
Nice to share about Dog Friendly Vacations 2024 to you.
