Kirby loves water and will do his best to drink the entire lake. He did not succeed. Always have a life jacket and water toys with you.
There are several beaches where trained dogs can be let loose. If you want to go to the beach off-leash, make sure you have good memory and control of your dog.
Our personal favorite off-leash beach is Mission Point Beach. It is more secluded, there are not many dogs or other people around.
Some other great beaches include Port Crescent State Park, Warren Dunes State Park, and Silver Lake Sand Dunes.

Always check the type of trail: gravel, paved, etc. Depending on how long you plan to hike, it’s important to protect your dog’s paws. We have had great success with this boot. Our dog is a mini golden retriever with thin legs and can hold his own well.

If you want to vacation in Frankenmuth in the fall, Frankenmuth also hosts a Scarecrow Festival during Halloween. You’ll find other dog-themed Halloween festivals in other cities, mostly for dog costume contests and prizes.

If you’re planning a trip to the popular dog-friendly city of Traverse City, be sure to bring your pooch on the wine trail. You can choose between the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail or the Leelanau Wine Trail, both of which have dog-friendly stops.
If you treat yourself to a resort for a weekend getaway, you don’t have to leave your dog at home. There are several resorts around Michigan that not only welcome your pets, but also pamper them with dog-specific amenities or packages!

It may seem strange to go shopping with your dog, but if you’re traveling through one of these cities and get stuck with your dog when it’s raining, you’ll be happy to find shelter.
Dogs are welcome at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Not all stores are pet friendly, so it’s a good idea to ask before entering a store. Kirby loved his time in the Commons!
Another popular dog-friendly mall is The River Place Shops in Frankenmuth (home of the Dog Bowl festival). Pet-friendly stores are marked with paws on their brochures, so you can easily navigate where you can go with your dog.

Partridge Creek Mall is also pet-friendly, although you won’t find any pet-friendly restaurants here. Again, this is at the discretion of each store, so be sure to ask before entering the store with your dog!
Drive-Ins have certainly been around for a long time, but you’ll find that most allow you to bring your dog to the movies. The Ford Drive-In is located in Dearborn and is said to be the largest drive-in theater in the world.
Both Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, and Jimmy John’s Field, an independent baseball league, have “Bark at the Park” events where you can bring your dog to a baseball game!
Dog-friendly Grand Rapids
This event usually takes place in the summer. In the past, Comerica Park has held this special event three times during the season. Jimmy Johns only offers it once a year.
