Best Dog Friendly Sunday Roast London

Best Dog Friendly Sunday Roast London – Tucked away in a pretty little back lane near Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, The Black Dog is a lovely little place with great food, a friendly atmosphere and a great selection of ales and craft beers for long hours. A winner in our books. I was lucky enough to go there with a colleague on a Sunday afternoon, and we loved the friendly staff, the sun-soaked beer garden, and of course the food.  This is my take on it…

Yes, yes, Vauxhall. At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking it’s just a big old bus station… but it’s much more than that. After all, it is the woodland for which the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Newport Street Gallery are remembered. Add to that the Black Dog – a historic pub on Glasshouse Walk, near the tranquil Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. It’s a hidden gem that’s very popular with locals and has a real neighborhood feel.

What’s even better is the staff who are incredibly welcoming and helpful. That’s not always the case in London… Add to that the fact that there’s a small beer garden out back – perfect when the weather’s bad – and you can see why we love this place.

On a Sunday afternoon in September, the sun was shining, so we had to have ‘majamad’ – a delicious fruity concoction filled with frozen ice – just what the doctors ordered.

I then opted for a pint of Black Dog lager – a lovely light beer (a winner in London) for under six pounds, and then it was time to order the main course. The aroma coming from the kitchen was absolutely delicious, and it was a toss up between chicken and beef, but I had to go for the beef. Well I did, because it was absolutely delicious and probably one of the best roasts I’ve had in a big smoke in a decade. Seriously!

It consisted of a generous slice of English beef with savory horseradish, buttery duck potatoes, steamed seasonal vegetables, roasted root vegetables, chunks of rice and a large Yorkshire pudding. My companion tried the half chicken (there’s a vegetarian option too), which was also good, and the portions served here are more than generous – it definitely fills the void! Also, £21 for beef and £19 for chicken – great value too! As if the cooking wasn’t enough, we then finished with dessert which comes with three scoops of delicious ice cream and espresso and drizzled on top. A perfect finish to the meal I would say!

I have to say, if you’re looking for a Sunday roast and you’re south of the river, I’d have to recommend heading to the Black Dog. It’s a charming, quiet area – not always in a central location – with a Sunday roast, really great staff and some great drinks on the menu too.

In addition, they also offer antipasti, more regular pub food, and ‘Steak Saturday’ – where you can have a 400g T-bone steak and side for £19. Add some red wine and what more do you need? The Parakeet, a critically acclaimed new pub in Kentish town with a 60-seat dining room, recently unveiled its first seasonal Sunday roast menu – and we’re more than happy to try it.
