Best Dog Friendly Restaurants Edinburgh – I am often asked “Are Edinburgh dogs friendly?” Edinburgh is a really friendly city. The frequency with which we travel means we don’t get to spend much time with the boys exploring Scotland’s capital. We already had a weekend off, so when Hotel Indigo invited us to check out their boutique hotel in York Place, we jumped at the chance.
The hotel is located in a row of Georgian townhouses in the heart of the New Town. On the doorstep of the hotel there are shops, restaurants, bars, guesthouses, parks and more. It is located a short distance from Edinburgh train station. The airport tram service also stops outside, so the hotel is a great base for exploring Edinburgh.

Hotel Indigo has 60 rooms ranging from comfortable double rooms to spacious rooms. Facilities include a gym, bar and breakfast room. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there are several restaurants at the entrance, so it is not a deal.

We stayed on the ‘Supav Stay’ package. For £15 per night, your four-legged friend can stay with you and enjoy a dog-friendly Edinburgh holiday. The ‘Supav Stay’ package includes medical treatment as well as the use of a dog bed and bowl.
Our king room is very spacious. There is a large bed and seating area, as well as a small bar (with delicious snacks).
The decor and soft furnishings have a lovely teal tone – adding a modern twist to a classic Georgian interior.
It’s a great opportunity to stay and relax – but first we have a city to visit.

When we checked out of the hotel, we exchanged the Georgian architecture for the tall buildings of the Old Town – the heart of the city.
Our Old Town tour took us to Blair Street near the Cowgate. One of our favorite restaurants in Edinburgh is on Blair Street, so it seemed like the perfect time to stop for dinner.
The City Cafe is an American-style restaurant that has been serving Edinburghers hot dogs, burgers and milkshakes since the early 80s.
We were given a choice of tables inside and headed to a booth with a 1950’s style jukebox, the music was good and the food and drink selection on the menu was even better.

We both ordered ice cream floats – Cherry Cola for me and regular cola for Mr G. As it was Friday we also ordered alcoholic drinks – pina colada for me and sparkling beer for Mr G.
For dinner, I had chili beef fries, a generous sprinkling of cheese and jalapeños. They are beautiful. Mr. G had macaroni cheese and fries and was pleased with his choice.
After dinner, we walked the Royal Mile near Holyrood Palace. The castle is the royal residence of Scotland and was once the home of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Our Old Town run from Holyrood took us to New Calton Cemetery. This impressive Georgian cemetery has a guard house built to deter robbers. Many graves were decorated with skulls and bones.

Now it’s time to rest. The boy was curled up on the dog bed and Mr. G and I were sitting on our beautiful king size bed watching TV.
We woke up the next morning, woke up, took a bath and got ready for the day ahead. The sun is shining and we’re looking forward to a day pottering around town with the boys – but first, breakfast.
I wasn’t sure how good the breakfast would be in a hotel without a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. A large selection of breakfast items is available, including several cooked options and a range of continental breakfast items.
We both chose a cooked breakfast – I chose the ‘full Edinburgh’ (minus the beans) which was delicious, especially the haggis. Mr. G had his favorite Old Fashioned Eggs Royale and the dish did not disappoint.

Our first stop was the St. James Quarter at the entrance of our hotel. The factory, located in the 1960s, opened with great interest in the summer of 2021. The new factory has attracted a number of high quality shops and restaurants to the east end of Edinburgh.
If your four-legged friend doesn’t have the energy to shop like you, the museum is dog-friendly with dog stations throughout and chairs available for rent. Many shops and restaurants are also dog-friendly, including Britain’s John Lewis – our destination.
