Day Trips With Dogs Brisbane – Looking for a great dog escape in Brisbane? There are many options available, whether you want to go to the beach, go to the mountains, taste some of the wines produced in Queensland, or enjoy the flower festival.
All of these places are less than a 3-hour drive from central Brisbane, some even closer, making them close enough for a weekend visit. In each area, I share the best dog-friendly spots, as well as plenty of dog-friendly beaches, off-leash dog parks, and pet-friendly shelters. So, choose the next week for you and your child…
Day Trips With Dogs Brisbane
The Gold Coast is a destination that the whole family enjoys, and you don’t have to leave your child behind when you visit. As well as a variety of great dog friendly accommodation from theme parks to boutique hotels, there are some dog friendly beaches – my favorites are The Spit Dog Beach and Palm Beach.
Houndog Day Care
Once you’ve had your fill of the beach, enjoy some of the Gold Coast’s great dog parks (there’s only one in the Botanic Gardens), order a craft beer, or head to Mount Tamborine and the Gold Hinterland Coast.
Bribie Island is still within the Brisbane area, and is home to my choice of dog friendly beach in Brisbane, South Woorim Beach. But it’s also a great weekend, and it’s easy to get to the island, thanks to the Mainland bridge.
It is best to stay in a pet-friendly holiday home on Bribie Island, as there are no holiday parks on or near the island that allow pets. However, the island is home to one of the few RSLs I’ve come across that is dog friendly, with the Community Restaurant allowing dogs in the outdoor dining area.
The Sunshine Coast has more to offer than sun and beaches, although there are some dog-friendly options along the beach, including the aptly named Sunshine Coast Beach.
Nature Walks — Jogs For Dogs
Go on one of the many face hikes or climb a mountain like Mt Ninderry. Take the Noosa Boats. Going to Eumundi Markets. And don’t miss the beautiful Countryside, including Maleny Botanic Gardens. There’s a dog-friendly train ride in Gympie!
The Sunshine Coast has a wide variety of dog-friendly accommodation, including beautiful pet-friendly homes, holiday homes and cottages.
If you are visiting Toowoomba with your dog, make sure you go in September. In September, the town hosts its annual Flower Carnival, and your dog is welcome to join in the fun.
Don’t miss a trip to Queen’s Park, the center of the festival, with a dog park. There are also wonderful flowers in Laurel Bank Park, and Ju Raku En is a beautiful Japanese garden. Afterwards, head to Picnic Point, check out the cool street art or relax at one of the many friendly restaurants.
Dog Friendly Walks In Brisbane
Now that the Covid border closure has been lifted, it may be possible to go to Byron Bay again for a week in Brisbane. This beach town is not known for its beautiful beaches. Belongil Beach and Tallow Beach are Byron’s off-leash options, or head to Brunswick Heads for a quiet walk on the sand.
Today, however, Byron is still known for its hipster lifestyle, which is well represented by its many trendy restaurants. Dog-friendly options include the Treehouse at Bellongil, Byron Bay General Store and Ewingsdale Park. And don’t miss a stroll through the fine restaurants in Newrybar and Bangalow.
Stanthorpe is home to Queensland’s only wine producing region, the Granite Belt Wine Region. Conveniently, it’s also close to Brisbane for your dog’s weekend getaway.
There are many cellar doors around Stanthorpe that welcome dogs to come to you, with an interesting variety of antiques to sample. And don’t miss the beer, cheese, apples and pies. You might take a break from tasting by hiking up to Donnelly Castle or nearby Quart Pot Creek.

There is a wide variety of friendly accommodation options around Stanthorpe from luxury cottages to rustic campsites. An open fire is necessary in the winter months, and the temperature often drops below zero!

But since most islands do not allow dogs, take a look at some of the smaller dog-friendly islands in Queensland.

Hiking And Camping With Your Dog
Cape Island is one of the most dog-friendly islands off the Queensland coast, especially in the tropics. A day trip to Great Keppel with your dog in Yeppoon makes for a great day out, thanks to the amazing beaches, swimming and snorkeling.
The easiest way to get to Cape Island is by boat. There are two boat companies that offer a short 30-minute trip, and they run regularly throughout the day. Advance registration is recommended.
We went with Keppel Connections, who take dogs for free. Our dog did not need a leash. There is also a Fast Exemption for big cats, which costs $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs.
Great Keppel (Wop-pa) The attraction of the island is its beautiful beaches, which are fortunately dog-friendly. Of course there are no signs on the beaches advising whether dogs are allowed or not. But the island is part of the same city as Yeppoon, so the usual rules for dogs being allowed on a leash during the day, as well as off-leash before 8am and 4pm and they work.
Australia’s Pet-friendly Road Trips
Fisherman’s Beach: Located on the island, this is where the boat lands you and is close to the small shops, restaurants and accommodation on the island. Walk down the beach to the south end to start the path to the nearby beaches.
Traigh nan Skelphiean: The next easiest beach to visit, it’s a 5-10 minute walk from the end of Traigh an Iasgair, although the last part of the path is quite rough, especially if you’re wearing wet clothes. It is popular for swimming and snorkelling, with parts of the sea located on either side of the beach.
Monkey Beach: With some of the best on the island, hop over to Traigh nan Skeilpchean and follow the long path to Traigh Monkey. Unfortunately we ran out of time to visit this beach.
Long Beach: The beautiful white sand beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There are two roads to the beach, which are easily accessible from the end of Fisherman’s Beach, and there is a road that goes inland that goes through the waste area of the island. The eastern part is a bare beach, although we had almost the entire beach to ourselves when we visited.

There are many roads to the island, although they are not well maintained or currently recorded. It is best to keep your dog on a leash while walking, because we saw goanna, echidna and many birds in the quiet area. If you are staying on an island, it is recommended that you inform your accommodation of your plans to walk in the forest.
As part of our Keppel Konnections yacht charter, we include lunch and drinks at Great Keppel Hideaway Island, which is great value and fun. Bistro at Hideaway is outdoor and dog friendly, with plenty of water bowls. I noticed a “No dogs allowed here” sign on my way out, but I’m not sure which area it’s for – we’re not the only ones with dogs.
Other dining options on the island include Tropical Vibes Cafe in the supermarket and Great Keppel Island Pizza. Both of these options can be dog-friendly outdoor tables, or you may want to take a trip to the beach.
If you’re just visiting for the day and want to spend the day exploring, it’s a good idea to bring a good lunch, so you don’t have to return to Fisherman’s Beach in the middle of the day .
Camping With Dogs
Although Cape Island’s main tourist attraction has been closed for years, with development plans released every few years (and then put on hold), there are also a few options for accommodation and holiday homes.
