In an era where canine influencers regularly pop up on Instagram and plop down in luxury hotel beds, seeing an “emotional support animal” jet off to a faraway destination is almost par for the course.  

With the rise of “interspecies families” (yes, that’s a thing), it’s no surprise that fur babies are increasingly being included in vacation plans. In fact, searches for pet-friendly hotels increased by 30 percent between 2017 and 2018, according to Orbitz.

“People treat their pets more like family members and don’t want to leave them behind when they travel,” says Ross Meredith, general manager of The Westin Ottawa. He adds that as pets are increasingly welcome in restaurants, shops and attractions, more travelers are bringing them on adventures.
