Good Dog Kc – Nicole Ortega and her daughter Scarlett are among thousands of people who have added a fur baby to their family during the pandemic — a goldendoodle named Kahlo. Being entrepreneurs, the mother-daughter duo were inspired by their dog and decided to venture into business by designing and manufacturing a collection of stylish dog accessories. Their brand, Good Dog, can be found in pop-ups throughout the Kansas City metro. Looking good for dogs is easy – the incredibly chic and modern dog collection appeals to dogs just as much as their owners.
Nicole is the owner of Clothes Minded, an eco-friendly women’s store in Westport. Since Scarlett was only four days old, she grew up in her mother’s shop and quickly took on more responsibilities, helping her mother organize clothes, ringing customers at the cash register, and serving customers with your fashion recommendations. Nicole envisioned her daughter’s entrepreneurial spirit from an early age and saw Good Talk as the perfect opportunity to provide an outlet for Scarlett’s talent.

However, in September 2021, Nicole was diagnosed with breast cancer. The devastating news ended any thoughts of starting a business with Scarlett. Unfortunately, Nicole’s cancer treatment included several hospitalizations; His third, and most recent, was the most severe, and he suffered heart failure and received a blood transfusion. A near-death experience made Nicole not want to waste any more time. He was determined to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to start a brand with his business-savvy daughter.

At nine years old, Scarlett is a wonderful girl with a wonderful dog. Together with his mother, he sews a denim line of dog collars. Accessories include collars, leashes, key chains and dog toys and treats. Inspired to make dog accessories more aesthetically pleasing, Scarlett and Nicole focused on infusing their brand with beautiful earthy colors and natural fibers. Unlike many dog products, the Fine Dog line is designed to complement both dog and owner’s home. Bringing core values from Clothes Minded to Good Dog, 90% of sellers are mother-daughter brands that are women-owned, sustainable and eco-friendly.
With the new business, Scarlett began to learn more about all kinds of dogs to help her clients with her skills. The difference between Good Dogz KC and other dog trainers is my philosophy. I truly believe that every dog is a good dog and the root cause of all evil is poor communication with our loving family. Essentially, I will train you to look for the cues and signals your dog is communicating and respond in a way they understand. I’m also the father of two humans (with 3 on the way) and I’ve learned that being a dog is like raising a human. We all learn and communicate in different ways and respond best to different stimuli. It is important to understand what your dog is doing in order to understand how to communicate with them. My method is based on science. I prefer an operant conditioning style of training that uses reinforcement to increase behavior and decrease punishment. Using the operant conditioning paradigm, we will work with positive reinforcement to increase the accuracy and speed of your dog’s behavior by adding their favorite reward (food/toy/etc.). We will increase the speed and accuracy of your dog’s behavior through negative reinforcement or removal (stress/food/toy/etc.) and in doing so, clarify what you are asking. You will learn how to properly discipline your dog and reduce unwanted behavior. Together, we’ll learn how to communicate safely and healthily in a way your cat understands and bring your dog to the level you’ve always dreamed of.

Your cat training journey is a journey in itself. This is not a quick fix and requires spending 5 – 15 minutes of quality time with your dog each day. Results are determined by your dog’s commitment to exercise, but most clients see improvement within a time frame of one or two sessions.

It’s important to sit down with everyone in your household who cares for your cat and establish some practical boundaries so that your dog understands his role in your household and his boundaries. If you have some ground rules in place, it’s important that everyone in the household agrees to those boundaries and rules, so your cat will have less confusion.
You and your dog aren’t the only ones learning, I’m with you! Every client and dog is a learning experience for me. I believe that criticism is an essential part of the learning process, so I will provide active feedback on all aspects of training and managing your dog’s training session. I also try to give you video highlights where you can see your positive and negative reviews of each session. I hope to hear honest and specific feedback from my clients, and even when we spend time together, I have an open door policy for questions or concerns from my previous clients.

First, let’s assess your dog’s current needs. For example, if your dog has a biting problem, he will not have time to exercise that natural instinct to behave properly, and if he misbehaves with appropriate and fair punishment. We will determine how your dog learns best and what motivates him. After that is identified, we make a short organized list of the behaviors we want to work on and the behaviors we want to eliminate. We’ll start small so you and your dog can pick up some tasty treats quickly to move you on to other goals.
I can still help! Many customers want to enjoy a nice walk with their dog without fearing every time a squirrel crosses their path. I can help you walk on a loose leash if you need it. Be warned though, once you fixate on one behavior it can become very addictive as you develop your relationship with your beloved furry friend.
