Big Bend’s diversity is its biggest draw. Grand canyons, vast deserts, forested mountains and ever-changing rivers offer incredible scenery. One of the most beautiful places the world has to offer is Big Bend National Park.
Unfortunately, the National Park does not allow pets on any trails, rivers or backcountry. However, leashed pets can walk over 200 miles of dirt road through the park – and most of them see very little traffic! Other popular activities include jeep tours, scenic drives along the Rio Grande to the Presidio, and exploring small communities.
Pet-friendly camping is available year-round in Big Bend State Park and at many private sites in the area. You’ll also find many pet-friendly vacation rentals and Airbnbs in Big Bend. There are also four pet-friendly hotels within easy driving distance of the park.
If you’re looking for a pet-friendly adventure where you can find it all, it’s hard to beat the Dixie National Forest. At nearly 2 million acres, it would take a lifetime to explore the 1,600 miles of trails, hundreds of miles of scenic hikes, 500 miles of fishing streams, and 90 lakes within the park’s boundaries. And the best part is that every square inch is pet friendly!
Rentals For Dog-friendly Vacations On The East Coast
The incredible landscape of southern Utah is something to behold. But if you’re traveling with pets, the area’s most popular attractions—Bryce and Zion National Parks—will leave you wanting. Both national parks have strict pet policies.
Fortunately, Dixie National Forest offers many options! We highly recommend the Red Canyon Trail, a five-mile trail with lots of ups and downs that wind through majestic hoodoos.
Dixie has 18 seasonal campgrounds that are typically open from May through September. If you plan to travel outside of the campground, the town of Panguitch has several pet-friendly hotels that offer good access to the park.
Florence has all the amenities that make a great beach city, but without the inflated price tag and tourist rush. The locals are friendly and the pace is relaxed, although you and your pet will have plenty to do!
Flagstaff Is A Pawsome Place
You can drive to explore the Oregon Dunes, hike the Sweet Creek Trail past eleven waterfalls in the Siuslaw National Forest, or rent a kayak and watch for otters while paddling the Siuslaw River.
Be sure to visit Cape Perpetua where you can walk your pet along the ancient lava flows that make up the coastline in this part of Oregon. All 26 miles here are pet-friendly, so you’re sure to find something to suit your needs. For the best view, climb about 800 feet to the viewpoint where you can see 70 miles of coastline on a clear day!
Florence boasts a surprising number of pet-friendly restaurants for a city of its size. There are also some pet-friendly resorts. And Best Western accepts two pets per room, including cats and dogs up to 80 pounds.
Located on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Fort Worden was an active military base until 1953. It is now a truly unique 433-acre state park overlooking Puget Sound.

While camping is not allowed on Mackinac Island, there are three pet-friendly lodging options to choose from. Featuring beautiful grounds and a pet-friendly restaurant, Mission Point Resort accepts pets for an additional $100 per stay plus tax. Park Place Suites offers three downtown apartments with a courtyard. They charge an additional pet fee of $30 per night. Sunset Condos offer sweeping and scenic views of Lake Huron and the Mackinac Bridge. Their pet fee is based on the size of your pet – under 40 pounds is $75 per stay, over 40 pounds is $100 per stay, and two pets over 40 pounds is $150 per stay.
For a pet-friendly trip, you can’t do better than the Natchez Trace! Stretching 444 miles from Nashville, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi, it’s a gloriously quiet stretch of road without the billboards of other US highways.
More than 100 exhibits, interpretive signs and marked trails provide information on archaeology, culture, history, nature, recreation and nature.
Trace is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, because there’s something smelling everywhere! And when it’s time to really stretch your legs, 28 different hiking trails and self-guided tours are just a stone’s throw away.

The only accommodations you’ll find on the Natchez Trace are primitive state parks and backyard campgrounds. However, there are plenty of pet-friendly accommodations in towns near the Trace. If you are traveling at one of the most popular times of the year, we recommend making a reservation.
