Northeast is a different region. From Maine’s mountain villages to New York’s exciting art scene, the region’s diversity attracts all kinds of travelers from far and wide.
Boston is a place that has it all. Quigley and I lived in the city for several years, and we easily navigated the hustle and bustle of downtown to the sprawling parks and charming colonial neighborhoods. The area is beautiful in any season, but Bostonians know how to appreciate the sunshine during summer and fall for dog lovers.
Feeling patriotic? The nation’s most important historic sites are located along the Freedom Trail, a brick road that takes visitors past landmarks that tell the story of the American Revolution. For more sophisticated girls and parents, P-Town has a dog park with an art gallery. Explore quaint dining and retail locations with over 20 pet-friendly restaurants and countless shops.
If you’re looking for a lure to fish, visitors will find plenty of options nearby. Nashoba Valley Winery is one of several orchards that allow dogs to pick apples. Those who want to get lost among colorful trees for a few hours can visit one of the nature reserves, such as the Blue Hills.

Classics like Thesda Terrace, Grand Central Station, the New York Public Library and Dumbo (a pet-friendly Brooklyn neighborhood) are just a few of the dog-friendly spots. If your dog needs some alone time, New York City has plenty of dog parks.
No trip to New York City would be complete without a visit to the mall. Luckily, your dog can join you in the shopping fun! Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Rgdorf’s and Barneys are known to allow well-behaved and leashed dogs, but you should call ahead to confirm. If you have a small dog and want to bring it with you, you can visit Macy’s in Herald Square and walk together on the original wooden escalator. Many boutiques are dog-friendly, and some Nordstrom locations even make custom cookies for dog shoppers.
NYC is a dog eat dog celebration! However, other than Boris and Horton’s, the first dog-friendly cafes approved by the city’s health department are too strict for dog food! But fear not. There are plenty of outdoor patio options throughout the city, and many pools and breweries allow pets inside.
Visiting for Christmas? Stock up on classic pup parkas like the Canada Pooch Premium Parka and head to Midtown to enjoy the holiday window displays. Afterwards, enjoy hot cocoa and papacchinos by the Rockefeller Tree.

Bar Harbor, Maine has small-town charm in the coastal wilderness. Business owners on Main Street take their canine love to the next level, like Coffee Hounds (which requires you to post pictures of your dog online) and Bark Harbor (a pet store and ram shop). Local seafood lovers, the Stomans happily welcome dogs on their decks.
A 15-minute drive from downtown leads visitors to the stunning Acadia National Park. It has 158 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage trails, and leashed pets are allowed to travel with their active parents.
To unwind, head to Jordan Pond House for famous pop-overs and homemade tea, followed by a leisurely stroll around the pond. Afterwards, head to the top of nearby Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunset.
Southern hospitality attracts travelers from all over the world. Steeped in history and charm, the South is a perfect vacation destination. From wild deserts to the house of jazz and all the fine dining of the twins, the South is a dog-friendly travel destination.
Great American Vacation Beaches
Located in the high desert of far west Texas, Marfa is a 3-hour drive from the nearest airport, making it an epic road trip destination. (Get tips for driving with your dog here.) Marfa is known as an art tourism mecca, and visitors rave about its historic architecture, fine dining and craft shops. Also, lovers of mystery tours can experience a strange luminous phenomenon known as the Marfa Lights. Best of all, most attractions and accommodations welcome dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Pet parents have many housing options, each with their own special vi. Glampers can bring vintage RVs, gear, or their own tents/campervans to the famous El Cosmico. Common areas include an outdoor kitchen, showers, a hammock garden (Quigley and I spent many hours reading and sleeping), and comfortable seating. Those looking to pamper themselves while enjoying the art scene can stay at the St. George Hotel.
Dog parents swear by the delicious food at Marfa Burritos, Foundation Pizza, FoodShark, and The Capri. A great place to relax and meet the locals before or after your meal is the hacienda-style park with its dance floor and sunken castle.
Owner John has been known to take groups on his planet bus to see the mysterious lights. John happily held Quigley for several hours as they exchanged personal stories.
15 Top Dog-friendly Vacation Travel Destinations
New Orleans is the city where I spent most of my youth, and I can’t wait to be back with my four-legged steed! With colors, music and historical details around every corner, this city has no shortage of inspiration. The city is walkable, delicious and a world-class experience. Travel + Leisure named New Orleans the “No. 1 Food City in America,” and you’ll say it if your mouth isn’t full.
We’d be remiss not to recommend a quick stop (or four) at Café du Monde. Dogs can accompany their parents at the fence, but my personal recommendation is to bring a reservation. Sip your coffee and stroll through the cafes while watching the street performers dance, sing and juggle in front of Jackson Square. If you prefer a more sophisticated twist to your meal, Broussard’s three-course jazz breakfast is available.
For a simple and classic New Orleans dish, you can’t go wrong with a po’ boy. Quigley ate a bit at Johnny’s Po Boys, the family’s oldest restaurant in New Orleans. Dogs are not allowed inside, so walking along the river is recommended. Nearby Woldenrg Park has lots of fields, wide lawns and a wonderful view of the river.
New Orleans also has a history of hunting, and the city will let you and your pets in on the spooky fun. After dark, the city offers several spooky walks, and some groups like the French Quarter Phantoms or Witch’s Brew allow dogs to join.
