Just a few hours from London there are many beautiful places for a weekend getaway with your dog. If beautiful year-round beaches, unusual coastal scenery and country walks are on your list, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is a great place for dogs. Last summer we decided to leave London for a two day trip there, to see Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, taking Argo the dog with us of course. In this article we talk about the area and give you tips on what to do with your dog (and what to avoid) to help you plan your next trip to the Jurassic Coast with your dog.
If you Google ‘Durdle Door’ and ‘Lulworth Cove’ you’ll find some amazing pictures, where the Mediterranean seems far away from London. However, Lulworth Cove (and nearby Durdle Gate) is a 2.5 hour train ride from London Waterloo, plus a 20/25 minute bus ride or a 3 hour drive from the city. .
To our surprise, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are dog-friendly beaches all year round (!), making it a convenient and popular destination for dog owners. What we didn’t know (although we should have guessed) is that the site attracts such a large crowd, especially in August and around the holidays, the time we chose for our trip. This creates logistical problems that should not be underestimated, but the visit can be strategic, to enjoy the Jurassic coast in all its beauty (more in this article).
Not only Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door can be found in this area, but there are many other things to do and activities that interest dogs, which we will tell you about in this blog post. But let’s start with the “must see”.
Enjoy Boutique Luxury At The Beach House, Dorset
Lulworth Cove crowns the small village of West Lulworth, which is full of thatched cottages and ice cream shops. Lulworth Cove’s clear water and scenery are unlike any other UK beach we’ve seen so far (except maybe Cornwall). With its pebble beach surrounded by gentle volcanic hills, it reminded us of the coast of Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. If you visit early in the morning, you will see few people and you can swim and play with your dog without worrying about disturbing the people nearby.
Access to the main beach at Lulworth Cove is easy (you only face it at Durdle Door which has a steep descent and many steps). From West Lulworth a small path leads gently down to the beach and in a few steps you will be on the pebble beach. There is only a small dog-free area on the west side of the beach, but for the rest (on the main beach) dogs are welcome.
On the western side of the bay, there is a smaller rock pool surrounded by the Lulworth Crumple, which is named after the beautiful rock stratification found on its side.
A steep descent takes you to the sea, where you can see people kayaking and rock climbing. We looked and there didn’t seem to be any companies offering dog kayaks/SUPs at this location at the moment, which was great.

You can also see fossils in the rocks if you look carefully and there are a few scouts for panoramic views.
From Lulworth Cove there is an uphill path that takes you to Durdle Door (the path is up and down and if you are fit it can take 35-40 minutes, if not it will take longer). The descent to the Durdle Door is steep, so walking shoes are recommended (avoid flip-flops at all costs!) and can be difficult for people and dogs with mobility issues. it’s the movement.
The Durdle Door is amazing. But don’t be fooled by the naive pictures that show it as a lost paradise: its beauty is what makes it such a popular destination. When we visited in August, it was like a busy beehive, swarms of people fighting for a spot on beach towels, a dark river like an army of ants marching in rows and rows. take pictures in the best places. I have to think that the pictures we saw online were probably taken in winter! My husband was disappointed by this detail and could not enjoy it. I still managed to appreciate the place, but I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t say I found the crowd a bit dull. We both agreed that the worst part was waiting for the bus for an hour and a half after arriving at Wool station to get to Lulworth Cove and nearly two hours at Durdle. Door to return, but not the best time to travel. short like ours.
