Best Dog Friendly Hikes Washington – Walking dogs (and cats, and even rabbits or other pets) has become popular in Washington state. It is also a big draw for people from out of state, whether they are traveling or visiting.

Many Washington state parks are pet-friendly, so you won’t find a better place to go.

While I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting every state park, here are some of my favorites so far.

The Most (and Least) Pet-friendly National Parks

This 503 acre park has lots of variety to hike and explore, as well as lots of areas to run and play! It’s a cool morning, and it’s good for cats!

Set on Puget Sound, this 431-acre park has parks for nighttime activities and beach access. When the tide is out, there’s a sandy beach to explore, and a few different trails to explore.

Small but no less fun, Nolte State Park is a 107 acre park with a few short trails and a nice lake for your dog to play in on a hot summer day.

Although I haven’t had the pleasure of photographing any of the pups at this state park (yet!) it’s a great day out! Spread over 3,854-acres, there is something for everyone. Coves and cliffs, beaches and trails, camping and more. Even a tide pool (be sure to keep the dog for their safety)!

Mt. Rainier With Dogs

There are four national parks in Washington state, and the general rule is that dogs can go where cars can go. So there is no road and no house. But there are some areas and others where your dog can enjoy our state’s national parks.

One of my favorite places to visit on a family vacation, Olympic Park has a lot to offer, and even some areas for our grumpy friends to explore!

As in all national parks, they are not allowed in public buildings, on tours or in the wilderness.

Although pets are allowed in the park, their activities are limited to the Pacific Crest Trail. They are also allowed to stay at the docks at Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, too, to explore a bit.

Like North Cascades National Park, dogs are allowed in the Pacific Crest Trail area of ​​the park. If you are camping in the park, you are welcome to bring your dog but they must be on a six-foot leash inside the park.

Dog-friendly, this national park includes a collection of historic sites and state parks in Washington and Oregon, and dogs are allowed not only on all trails but inside the park’s -strong ! However, they are prohibited in all public rooms including the hard copy rooms and guest areas (where the carpet is outside the toilet).

In general, dogs and other pets are allowed in the United States. A few concessions and exceptions are made to forest service roads. The popular and rugged Enchantment Trail and Ingalls Lake Trail are two such areas. Many other methods are fine but as always your pet must be secured on a leash.

With more than 1,000 miles of trails, DNR lands are a great choice for walking and enjoying your dog or other pets. Be sure to check the posted signs to see if pets are allowed.

We are blessed with many diverse and well-managed parks here in Washington State. Dogs on leashes are also welcome in all of them! Some of my favorites include Rattlesnake Lake in North Bend, Point Defense Park in Tacoma, Marymoor Park in Redmond (including a great outdoor dog park).

Some things to consider when deciding whether a route or location is dog-friendly and good for you and your dog (or other pet):

That may be too much for your dog (and of course for any other critters you might consider bringing) so an early morning walk would be best for that area, or just another option while watching. .

Is it the advantage of the upper surface, which can be hard on their joints? Is there a stream/river to cross and is your pet afraid of water? What about rocks or other obstacles? Things that may be easy for us humans can be challenging for some dogs when it comes to walking.

For puppies and older dogs, long walks can be tiring and damaging to their joints and muscles. Cats and other small animals are not as patient as adult dogs. Consider using a backpack if you really want to bring your pet/puppy, or take a different approach.

Located on the Columbia River, the Dog Mountain Trail treats hikers and their four-legged friends to beautiful springtime blooms and year-round breathtaking views of the Gorge. . Make sure you warm up before you go out; The first half mile is a steep climb before you reach a split in the trail. The scenery may be a challenge for some, but we promise the views of the Columbia River and surrounding mountains are worth it! Along the same path (if you take the eastern leg of the path), there is also a meadow called “Puppy Dog” Meadow. If that’s not enough to make this trip, I’m not sure what is!

Featured in “The Dog Lover’s Companion to Oregon” by Val Mallinson, this trip is perfect for you and your friend. Many people travel this route in the fall or spring hoping to see gray whales migrating up the coast! Whales or not, this beautiful trail starts at sunset and takes you through an old growth forest. After half a mile or so, you will be rewarded with a view of the bay. This trail is 4.8 miles on a flat back, making it accessible to runners of all skill levels and your friends.

Located in the Mount Hood National Forest, this trail shares its name with the Washington Hike but offers a different experience. The 6.9 mile loop trail features beautiful wildflowers and offers spectacular views of Mount Hood. Keep your dog on a leash and enjoy the beautiful grass and various animals along the way.

Save it for next summer! The road is currently closed for construction until the summer of 2023, but it will reopen, and when it does, you’ll be the first to be there! Located near Snoqualmie Pass, the Franklin Falls Trail is a dog-friendly hike that’s also great for dogs. A 2 km round trip leads to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by greenery. Let your friend calm down in the river while you take in the beauty of the hot water. The reward for the little effort required is truly amazing!
