Located on the south coast, between East Sussex on one side and Hampshire on the other, West Sussex is one of London’s most accessible coastal areas and is home to many dog-friendly beaches all year round, even in summer. This means you can have a beach day with your dog from London in less than two hours, whenever you want.

We’ve been busy visiting lots of Sussex beaches (anyone should) and when compiling this list we’ve considered a number of factors… the beach itself, whether there are restrictions on dogs, how easy it is to get to. Littlehampton West Beach is one of the few places where you’ll find sand dunes in West Sussex (the best sand dunes we found so far were at the dog-friendly Camber Sands in East Sussex). The west coast, next to the River Arun, stretches for several miles until it reaches Climping (more on this below). There are actually two beaches in Littlehampton – East and West, one on each side of the river. In summer, East Beach is reserved for swimmers, which is fair as there is also a dog-friendly beach on West Beach. You can reach the beach by walking past the West Beach Café or take the wooden path through the sand dunes behind the café (our choice).

It may not be as famous as some others, but it is a great beach to visit with your dog thanks to its wide beach, cool Perch beach wooden cafe on Lansing Beach, and a large green area behind the beach for dogs to run. around Okun is the home of Harry the dog, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for people and dogs, and a varied menu for lunch or dinner (dinner available in summer).
Another great stretch of dog friendly beaches and a very popular dog friendly cafe we came to check out… Bluebird Cafe. The cafe has a real beach vibe, is colorful and welcoming to people and dogs. You’ll also find a nice row of colorful beach huts slightly back from the sand – not quite the caliber of West Wittering Beach huts, but great for photos.
This is the fastest beach you can get to from London by train. Like all its West Sussex counterparts, it offers miles of dog-friendly shingle beaches all year round. However, after the beach we always look for a dog friendly cafe, and since there isn’t one right on the beach, we recommend taking the train one stop back to Lansing Beach, see #2 above.
Climping Beach is a must-visit beach if you want to get away from it all. There’s a sense of peace and quiet here, even though it’s the next beach after Littlehampton West Beach, which is an hour away (just remember you’ll have to come back if you leave your car at Climping). We basically had the beach to ourselves, apart from a few swimmers and other dog walkers, so it’s a great beach if your dog needs some space.

This is actually because in the parking lot and the beach on the left dog may not be kept on the lead after arrival, but in the parking lot and the beach on the right dog must be on the lead. However, in summer, dogs are not allowed between waves 14a to 18, where the beach huts are nice. Eastern Cape still has plenty of room for dogs to enjoy the beach all year round, right from the beach hut and around the corner. However, the beach gets very crowded on hot summer days, so it should be visited on a summer weekday or at the end of summer.
