Sorry, we could not find the list of pets in our database. But we do have pet friendly options nearby! Do you know one here? Let us know. My little family took a camping trip in Pennsylvania to a small town called Jim Thorpe in the Lehigh Gorge Valley. I grew up on the NY/PA border so I haven’t seen these mountains in transit. Leaf! Jim Thorpe has also made “best of” or “must see” lists in Town & Country, Expedia, Country Life, USA Today, National Geographic, etc. I was intrigued by Jim Thorpe’s description of a Victorian town/European village. . It has even been nicknamed the “Switzerland of America”.
You walk into Jim Thorpe and immediately see the beauty of the buildings! Most of the historic buildings were colorful and had lots of detail! The city center is very walkable with many shops, restaurants and businesses to visit. Many historic buildings have been converted, such as old fire stations that have been converted into bars, Irish pubs that have been converted into old hotels, etc. Jim Thorpe is also steeped in history which you can see everywhere in the buildings, company names, museums and more. I noticed that every place in the city center that I found in the library was called Mach Chunk as the name of the old city. Jim Thorpe was a Native American actor and the town was renamed in his memory in 1953.
The town of Jim Thorpe was originally focused on the railroad and mining. Jim Thorpe had a mining history museum. One of the major attractions is the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad. When we visited, we saw a circa 1900 steam train offering a train ride. Even the train is dog friendly!! Unfortunately, my dog doesn’t like loud noises (horns, screeching tires, etc.) so we won’t be able to enjoy the trip. I’m so sad! I can only imagine how beautiful it was on the leaves. In front of the train station in Josiah White Park, there is a beautiful gazebo that gave me Star Hollows (Gilmore Girls) vibes!
Comfort Inn Lehigh Valley West Review
I was fascinated by all the Victorian houses around Jim Thorpe. Two famous places are Asa Packer Mansion and Harry Packer Mansion. Both buildings were Italianate. Asa Packer was the founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. And you know what?! Packer is connected to Sophie! how so?? He was born in 1805 in Mystic, Connecticut. He went to work at the age of 17 and ended up in Mach Chunk, Pennsylvania. Harry Packer’s mansion stood next to Asa Packer’s mansion overlooking Jim Thorpe’s town. Asa’s son, Harry Packer, received the house as a wedding present. Harry Packer’s mansion also inspired Disney to model the movie “Haunted Mansion”. The Asa Packer Mansion is open for tours and the Harry Packer Mansion is a bed and breakfast that offers weekend tours (crime mystery events). I was blown away by the beauty of the balcony at the Asa Packer Mansion and the view of the railroad tracks, mountains and downtown Jim Thorpe was amazing!

Jingle Bells Christmas Shop – A shop for all things Christmas. Walking through this store was fun. I love how they incorporated Christmas into their fall outdoor decor!
Muggles Mug – Calling all Harry Potter fans, this is a must see. The best part? It’s dog friendly! Poppuccino Got a Poppuccino (pumpkin, whipped cream and milk bones!). We (Mughals) enjoyed the delicious pumpkin.
Molly Maguire’s Pub and Steakhouse – We’ve enjoyed lunch here since I had the baby. Great food and friendly service! The owner is actually from Dublin, Ireland!
Fun In The Poconos: Visiting Bushkill Falls, Milford, And Jim Thorpe, Pa
There are many things we want to see, but they are closed. If you’re planning a day in Jim Thorpe, check the hours of the places you want to visit. Most had unusual hours. As I mentioned earlier, there was a firehouse turned bar… Marion Hose’s bar that I was hoping to see. They had a large outdoor patio that served food and drinks. Also downtown was an old bookstore and an Irish thrift store that was closed when we visited. We still enjoyed walking around downtown during the day.
Jim Thorpe can be a great weekend getaway if you are in the Poconos/Eastern Pennsylvania area. Stay tuned for the next blog: Camping at Jim Thorpe.
