Best Dog Friendly Trails Shenandoah National Park – Hi DC friends! Are you looking to get away this summer? Look no further, Shenandoah National Park is just a few hours outside the area, full of exciting outdoor activities, great wineries, wineries and some of the best hiking trails in the state. 

Zach and I attended Southern/Central Virginia University, so we have been familiar with the Shenandoah Mountains for many years. We’ve traveled with the Navy on several trails in Shenandoah National Park, but we’ve never been through Duke. This time we toured Gateway House DC with the Navy and visited local breweries over the weekend. Needless to say, we longed for a weekend trip to the Shenandoah Mountains with our dog.

Shenandoah National Park is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, about 75 miles from Washington, DC. The park is 105 miles long from the north end of Royal to the south end near Waynesboro, Virginia. Skyline Drive is the main road that runs through the entire park. It leads to all kinds of hiking trails, lodging, camping, and many wonderful places where you can stop to enjoy the views.

Shenandoah National Park and surrounding towns provide truly unique wildlife! We were pleasantly surprised by the number of dog-friendly hotels, bars, restaurants and eateries in the area. Pets are allowed in most areas of Shenandoah National Park. Don’t want to camp? There is a shelter for animals! I find the pet-friendly rooms at Big Meadows Lodge and Skyland Resort very popular and they book up quickly. We are big fans of Airbnb! Explore the wildlife that lives near Lowry, Virginia. You will find beautiful cabins and farmhouses.

This last trip we decided to stay at the Motel 6 Mt. Jackson – Shenandoah. Not only are pets always free at Motel 6, our location is also close to beer-friendly restaurants and trails.

Of course, the best thing to do in Shenandoah National Park is to hike! Here are some of our favorite trails that allow dogs: High Top Trail, Hawksbill Mountain, and Mary’s Rock Summit. This year I really want Devil’s Little Steps, the Lewis Falls Trail, and the White River Trail. 

Not really a traveler? Drive to Skyline Drive. There are many amazing things to download and enjoy.

The Shenandoah Valley is full of friendly wineries. We always check the Corkhounds app and website before bringing a Navy or Duke to a winery. I recommend calling the winery to confirm their policy. Policies are subject to change!

We are proud owners of our Virginia wineries, so we look for wines on the Virginia Wine Pass that allow dogs. On our last trip, we narrowed down our search to Wolf Gap Winery and Cave Ridge Vineyards. We decided to visit Cave Ridge Caves because dogs are allowed in their rooms. When we got there, they joked that they liked dogs more than children. I can’t complain about that!
