I sat watching the waves move fast and furious as the dogs frolicked on the ground beside me. Ollie was fast asleep on the sofa reading a book and I sat down with a big cup of tea, two delicious scones and some writing on my laptop.

I’ve been in Ayr in Neudart, Scotland for three days now and I feel completely and utterly relaxed. I have no expectations for this vacation, no to-do list, minimal social media needs, no plans.
I live in Camusblathen, a small holiday cottage less than 100m from the sea, overlooking the Isle of Skye. I waited 5 years to return to this little paradise in the UK and I finally did.
We stayed at the Neudart Bunkhouse and my brother and I hiked some hills while my dad met with some locals about sustainable forest management. I’ve only been here for two days but I know I’ll have to come back one day, I can’t believe it’s been 5 years but here I am.
The cottage where I stayed this time with Ollie, Rowland and Baxter was in Eyre, about 7 miles from the main village of Inver. Although Knoydart is on the UK mainland, you can only access it by boat or on foot a few miles from the nearest road. In the off peak season the boats that run 3 times a day through Maleigh do not allow cars, not that there are many places to go.

This holiday was always going to be one with no plans… and with slow WiFi, the only pub closed for the season, and one shop and two cafes each 7 miles away, there was nothing to do but relax.
So far, I have drunk about 20 cups of tea, cooked and eaten several times, walked with 3 dogs and read 1.5 books. Hygge at its best!
The view here is incredible. Last time I visited I saw sharks and dolphins on the boat and this time we saw deer, pine martins and some local sheep.
With only the mail dropping off 3 times a week and little more than a small post office for goods, you have to carry everything you need, which means packing lights isn’t so easy this time around. Especially with two dogs.

We sleep 7 people in the cottage, one room with three double beds and one extra single bed.
It is equipped with all the kitchen equipment you need in the kitchen, including a dishwasher, two firewood, three comfortable sofas and a large dining table that can seat 7 people comfortably.
David the owner has renovated this property into a cozy and comfortable beach house. Many local pictures and paintings adorn the walls, and beach-related trinkets and pebbles add to the decor. There are plenty of books, DVDs and board games to keep you entertained for more than a week. We tried the 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle but couldn’t get very far.
Best of all, you’re just seconds away from a quick walk on the beach or a long walk in the hills. The house is dog friendly, has a porch to wipe off muddy feet before coming in, and any dog will be happy to have a fire going on a winter’s day.

There are plenty of local dogs that are happy to join the walks, and while there are some areas where sheep must be on a lead, there are plenty of paths where your dog can roam freely.
It’s hard to capture the serenity of this place, but I hope my photos begin to do it justice.
