I understand that camping with your dog seems more practical than staying in a hotel with your dog, and it is often cheaper to take your dog than to stay in a hotel. Welcome to the club!

The first time we took Kirby on vacation, we decided to go camping. It was my first time camping with a dog and boy did I learn a thing or two on this trip.

So in this post I’m going to tell you how to survive your first camping trip with a dog and avoid some of the pitfalls we went through the first time!

I recommend doing a test at your site. It doesn’t just take away the fear of the unknown if you’re not sure how your dog will behave in the park. This will show your dog in the tent, tied up for a long time, etc.

We did our test at my mother-in-law’s house and cooked with a fire pit, the whole nine feet to see exactly how Kirby would perform.

Camping in the rain or extreme heat without a dog is no fun, so for a dog it would be terrifying. Of course, you can’t guarantee what the weather will be like when you book your camping dates, but it’s a good idea to make sure it’s not too hot when you plan to camp since you’ll be outside all the time.

At the very least, your dog needs shade, a cool mat or a pad. If you know it’s going to be hot, it might be a good idea to bring a kiddie bath to fill up so your dog can splash on the cool floor.

So this was big for us. On our first camping trip with Kirby, I requested a site near the water and shot the bathroom. At night, people come into our yard to use the bathroom, and Kirby screams and screams at the sound and electricity. Never again…

I recommend finding a backend site or a corner site that doesn’t have a lot of people going to or from your site to get to something. Yes, it can be a little inconvenient to keep going to the bathroom, but calming your dog down at night is a lot easier.

The first time we camped with Kirby, we forgot to cut our nails before the trip, so we were constantly worried about him poking holes in the tent and air mattress. Save yourself the worry and trim your dog’s nails before your trip.

We also put a blanket under the air mattress to protect Kirby’s sleeping position on our bed. You can get them their own bed, but if your dog sleeps in your house, good luck trying to sleep on your bed in your tent.

You can also put a towel or outdoor blankets on the outside of your tent if you are really worried about tearing your tent.

10 Best Tents For 2024, Tried And Tested

Make sure that your dog’s “dog” on the trip is facing the picnic table, the fire pit, and in a way that your dog can see you. You want to make sure they don’t run into the tent or step on it or fall into other things within six radius. The reason I say six feet is because most arenas have a policy that dogs must be within 6′ at all times.

I recommend that you set up your dog before you start setting up your tent. That way, you don’t have to worry about where they are while you focus on everything else. Be sure to give your dog water immediately.

This is important. The first time we camped with Kirby, we arrived after dark, setting up our tent in the dark and trying to find him doing his business in the dark. He was not happy. He wouldn’t keep waking me up every 2 hours all night asking to be let out just to roll over and he wouldn’t go. It was very bad.

Now I’m sure I’ll take her to the potty area during our time. Once he finds an area he likes, I make sure to take him to a familiar area for the rest of the trip. Since he could see and hear his surroundings during the day, he doesn’t feel scared or insecure afterwards.

You will meet a lot of kids while camping, or at least we have. Children tend to be rude when it comes to your dog, so make sure you supervise your dog so that they are not out of control.
