Dog Friendly Vacations Texas

Dog Friendly Vacations Texas – Fall is the perfect time to explore nature for a pet-friendly weekend getaway in Texas. The weather is finally getting colder, but it’s not too cold and you need to pack your winter gear. Walking during the day is not only tolerable, but fun, not to mention safe for you and your dog. At night, the temperature drops, allowing for a cozy campfire under the stars, where you can make s’mores or snuggle under a blanket with your baby.

Lucky for San Antonio, there are many interesting places to visit within easy driving distance. Whether you’re looking for the full camping experience, a luxury cabin, or something in between, there’s something for everyone. If you’ve been feeling restless and restless during quarantine and the summer months, it’s time to pack your bags, hop in the car and head to one of these three pet-friendly weekend getaways in Texas.

If you spend any time on Instagram, you’ve probably seen these cute little cabins located in remote parts of America. There are three outposts in Texas, all within easy driving distance of San Antonio: one outside Dallas (4.5 hours from SA), one outside Houston (3 hours from SA) and one outside Austin/San Antonio (in Wimberley, just about 1 hour to be exact). !

Although located outside, each room has a comfortable queen-sized bed, stunning views of nature, a bathroom with shower and toilet, and a kitchen with cooking utensils. Best of all, Gateway is so pet-friendly that only $40 is charged to cover additional cleaning costs! They provide food and water bowls, dog s’mores kits, and have long runs outside that you can leash your dog but still have room to roam.

According to the founders, Gateway was “created to allow people to escape time, space and distance. Our little cabin in nature offers a break from the city, technology and work, so you can recharge and reconnect with who and what matters.”

If you want to “get away” from it all without the hassle, this is the perfect weekend getaway for you and your dog!

If you are looking for something to do with nature, the 13 Acre Retreat may be the place for you! I first discovered this hidden gem last winter while looking for a weekend getaway for my husband and I for our 2 year wedding anniversary. This charming cabin is located on 13 acres of wilderness outside of Dripping Springs, an hour and a half from San Antonio.

Each cabin has air conditioning/heating, a small coffee pot, comfortable beds with fresh linens, and beautiful views of the Texas mountains. There are two compositor toilets on site, but don’t let that scare you! They are beautifully decorated and always clean! Other amenities include a water cooler to fill your reusable bottles, a sink with soap to wash your dishes and hands, and a shower with hot water. However, it’s the outdoor shower that’s really nice, but a little chilly if you go in the colder months.

There’s no shortage of things to do while staying at the 13-acre retreat. You can explore the property (note: there are no trails, so it’s an adventure!) or drive and check out some of the nearby state parks, like Pedernales Falls. If hiking isn’t your (or your dog’s) thing, you can also check out several dog-friendly wineries/breweries within 20-30 minutes of the retreat. My personal favorite is Hawk’s Shadow Winery.

If you haven’t seen fallen maples in the fall, you’re missing out. The Lost Maples State Natural Area is located less than 2 hours from San Antonio and is known as one of the few places in Texas where you can see spectacular fall foliage. You have to time this right because the leaves don’t start to change until the temperature drops – usually in mid-October or early November. Weather in Texas is always unpredictable, but you can check the park’s fall foliage color report here.

Once the leaves start to change color, the missing maples become the center of the action! It is highly recommended that you book a camp in advance – sometimes a year in advance! Due to Covid, access is very limited and passes (both camping and day passes) must be booked in advance online or by contacting the customer service centre.

I promise you, it’s worth the trouble! Not only is Lost Maples a beautiful piece of nature year-round, you can explore more than 10 miles of trails, including a loop that takes you to the top of the 2,200-foot cliff. There are 30 campsites with running water and electricity, and about 50 primitive campsites you can visit, most of which are a short drive from compost toilets.

If you or your kids aren’t into camping, you can definitely take a day trip to Lost Maples. It’s definitely enough to drive there in the morning, enjoy the hike, and drive home in the afternoon. However, it’s hard to beat a night or two under the stars, especially when it’s cool enough to curl up in a sleeping bag with your dog!
