Sydney’s Northern Beaches region is home to the largest number of dog-friendly beaches in Sydney. But none of these dog beaches are beaches yet.
Dog-friendly Beaches On The Sunshine Coast, Qld
The North Shore Council has proposed allowing dogs on a lead for limited hours at the southern end of Mona Vale Beach and the northern end of Palm Beach. However, the final decision has not yet been made, and after the last appeal in the process in August 2023, it appears that the trial will not take place until 2024.

Visit Rowland Reserve Dog Park in Bayview, any time of day, any time of year for a dog-friendly adventure in Sydney’s far north. (Search for “Bayview Dog Park” on Google Maps).
This grassy area and the surrounding waters of Pittwater are very stable throughout the day, free of pollutants. No wonder people from all over Sydney run around with their dogs!
Dog Friendly Beaches And Swimming Holes In Sydney
Although located in Pittwater, this Sydney dog beach is calm, with deep water swimming not far away for confident dog swimmers. A dog washing truck is often parked nearby.
Try to grab one of the designated one-hour parking lots next to the airport if you’re not staying long, otherwise the parking isn’t worth it in my experience. Then consider driving around the bay to drink in Newport’s dog-friendly beer garden.
While none of the northern beaches are dog-friendly, there are dog-friendly spots along the beaches behind the lakes. The northernmost of these is at Curl Curl Lagoon.
Visit the Flora and Richie Roberts Reserve on the south side of Curl Curl Lagoon, where dogs are allowed on a lead and many dogs enjoy swimming in the sea. (Adam Street Reserve on the west side of Griffin Road allows dogs on a leash and is close to a lagoon, but does not have a sandy beach.)

Just be aware that wells can get dirty, especially after heavy rain, so be careful, especially if your dog gets into deep water. Also note that dogs are prohibited on the sand between Flora and Curl Curl in the Richie Roberts Reserve. Parking is chargeable at the resort, but there is free parking nearby.
To the south is a fountain where dogs bathe. Manly Lagoon is located north of Manly Beach in the town of Queenscliff.
Manly Lagoon Park and Lagoon Park West, known as “Lagoon Reserve” on Google Maps, are designated outdoor dog parks. And that’s right, there’s nothing to stop a couple of dogs running free in the sea.
For Curl Curl Lagoon, be aware that the water quality is not good, especially for a few days after heavy rain. In this case, you must keep your dog on a leash if you do not want to swim in the sea.
Best Dog Beaches, Victoria, Australia
Go for a walk before or after, consider walking your dog on the footpath that runs back and forth between Queenscliff Beach and Manly Beach, south to Fairy Bower and Shelly Beach. This is a great beach walk, but note that dogs are not allowed on the sand at any of these beaches. There are several restaurants along the way with dog seats outside.
When I lived on Sydney’s North Shore, Sandy Bay in Clontarf was my favorite dog beach to visit in Sydney. Confusingly, there is no sign that dogs are allowed, but according to the municipality’s website, it is an outdoor dog area regardless of time. There is also a map on the website showing the rental area.
It’s no wonder it’s so popular with many dog owners, especially on sunny days in the warmer months. It is close to the center of Sydney and the water is beautiful and shallow, great for small and unreliable dogs. Just be warned that it’s best to go near low tide as much of the beach can disappear underwater at high tide.
Please note that dogs are not allowed on the beach at Clontarf Reserve at the start of Sandy Bay Road. However, dogs are allowed to walk through the park, where most cars are located, albeit at an expensive price. (There are a few lesser-known parks in Sandy Bay, but they fill up quickly.) At the marina, Sandy Bear welcomes dogs to their outdoor seating.
Escape To The Best Beaches In Sydney, Australia
Great Mackerel Beach is a small stretch of water on the west coast of Pittwater, surrounded by a national park. The only way is by ferry from Palm Beach (dogs are allowed outside on a lead), or your own boat.
Dogs are allowed in the Mackerel Beach Dog Area every day of the week between sunrise and noon. 9:30. Outside these hours, they are allowed on the beach, but must be on a leash.
Dogs are allowed on the beach between the jetty and the northern buildings. Surprisingly, dogs are not allowed at the water mark or hiding in the water, so don’t swim with your dog here.
There are several dog-friendly beaches around the main town of Mosman, on Sydney Harbor on Sydney’s north shore. Check out these great dog beach options, but keep in mind that there are time restrictions, especially on weekends.

Perhaps the most popular dog-friendly beach to visit west of Taronga Zoo is Sirius Cove Reserve.
There are some limitations, detailed here. Dogs are allowed on the beach and in the water all day on weekdays, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays they are only allowed before 9 and after
Off-leash hours are used for nearby lawn care, although it is best if dogs are allowed off-leash for picnics in the shaded yard during the day on weekends. The reserve and the beach are quiet and peaceful, well maintained. From the street, with an easy and free car.
Across the water and Spit Bridge are two Spit Reserves, Spit West Reserve and Spit East Reserve, separated by Spit Road. Both are good dogs, although there are rules set by Mosman Council.
Best Beaches In Sydney, Australia
Both dogs are allowed on a lead all day, except at Spit West Reserve between 8.30am and 2.30pm on Saturdays. When going to the beach or swimming, dogs are allowed all day on weekdays, but after 9 am or 4 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
See the map on the attached page above for the exact boundaries of the two reserves. Spit East Reserve is small, right between Sydney Harbor Kayaks and the restaurants to the south. The Spit West reserve is very large around Pearl Bay, but there is no permanent beach. Make sure to keep your dog off the busy roads and pay attention to the price of the car.
There is another dog-friendly beach in central Mosman at Clifton Gardens Reserve, called Chowder Bay.
As stated on this website, dogs are only allowed on the beach and in the water east of Clifton Gardens Jetty. They are allowed on the beach on weekdays, before 9 o’clock or after 4 o’clock in winter. During the summer sun protection period, they are allowed on the beach after 9 or 18.

The rules for dogs are more relaxed on the adjacent lawn, with dogs allowed all day on weekdays and before 7 p.m. 9 and after 16 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. At other times they must wear a rope. (It is a popular picnic spot.)
Parking at Clifton Gardens is very expensive, although it is free to drive up the hill and then down. Alternatively, you can combine a visit to the beach with a walk in the nearby forest. If you park on Middle Head Road, at Frenchy’s Cafe or George’s Head Lookout, there is a bush.
